TO ALIA-WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, R. OGDEN DOREMUS', of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extinguishing Fires; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to understand the same.
-This invention consists in the use of liquid sulphurons, or liquid or solid, carbonic acid and liquid ammonia, for the purpose of extinguishing fires in vessels or buildiiigs, or wherever a fire occurs in an enclosed space.
, 'Itis well known that sulphurous acid, or carbonic acid and ammonia, can be liquidized or solidified by pressure, or by pressure and cold. I propose to keep on hand, or cause to be manufactured, suitable vessels, capable of containing sulphurous acid or carbonic acid and; ammonia, in the liquid or solid state, and after these vessels have been charged, I dispose of the sauic in such a manner that, in 'ease of a fire in the hold of a vessel, or in the interior of a building, the space in which the fire originated can be instantly filled with sulphnrous acid or carbonic acid gas and ammonia, whereby the fire is smothered and extinguished. The vessels containing the liquidor solid acids may be put up in any convenient position in the vessel or building, and
suitable tubes may be provided to conduct the escaping gases to the desired spot, or to the various parts of the vessel or building. The gases are manufactured by any of the well-known methods, which require no further explanation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The-within-described method of extinguishing firesby'means of snlphurous acid, ammonia, or carbonic acid, in a liquid or solid state, substantially as set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 26th day of July, 186 6.
R. OGDEN DOREMUS.
