Description
' W. H. TOWERS. TURRBT BRICK BURNER.
No. 62,089. 7 Patented Feb. 12, 1867.
in amen. T- KWNQ %L I 1 .g initrh totes gaunt @nm.
WILLIAM H. TOWERS,'0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 62,089, dated February 12, 1867.
IMPROVED BRICK BURNER.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILnmM H. Townes, of the city of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a. new and'useful machine, which I call the Turret Brick Burner, for the more rapid, regular, and convenient burning of bricks; and I do hereby declare that the following is u-full and ezactdescription of the construction and operation of the some, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is an isometrical projection of the exterior of the turret, viewed from the front, a section being removed to show a part of theiinterior, with the turn-table.
Figure 2 is an isometrica-l projection of the turret, viewed from the rear, with the turn-table and all parts above it removed, showing the furnace nnd arrengement for revolving.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a, platform or turn-table which revolves in a. turret or circular kiln of brick, upon which turn-table theunburnt bricks being placed, they are, by its revolution, carried .over the furnace containing the fuel, and on the completion of the revolution delivered completely burned at the aperture through which they were introduced.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to tne'drawinfgs and the letters marked thereon.
I construct a. circular turret or-domeof brick, A, from the top of which arises a. chimney, B, for conducting off the smoke and gases formedby the combustion of the fuel. Within the turret Ihsve the turn-table G, built of iron, either in plates or bars, or a combination of both. This turn-table is capable of revolution about its centre D by means of the crank E and cog-wheel F, the cogs of which operate in the holes 9 surrounding the turn-table, or upon s series of cogs attached to the turn-table. The turn-table is guided and supported by a centre piutle at D and the wheels J. The furnace occupies one-third the interior of theturret, and is separated from the remaining portion by theend plates I, which rise near byto the bottom of the turn-table. The doors K admit the fuel upon the grate L. The smoke and gases arising from thecombustion of the fuel pass over the end plates I and through the turn-table by means of the perforations M, and then through the flue N into the chimney.
To use the burner, the unburned brick are piled upon an iron truck, 0. This is introduced through the. door P uponthe turn-table, which is then revolved until there is room to introduce another loaded truck beside the first, and so on till the table is filled. Upon the removal of a truck of burned bricks, another with unburned ones is substituted therefor, and the kilns thus keptulways full. Hence, when the machine is in operation, assuming a complete revolution to require three hours, the unburned brick will he one hour before arriving over the fire, by which time they will be thoroughly dried. Another hour over the fire bakes them, and during the remaining hour before their arrival at the door 1? they are, by the action of the cool air from :the doors l. and Q, 'sufiiciently cooled'for handling, and can be removed from the kiln.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The revolution of unburned bricks within a. circular turret or kiln in such a manner that during the first part of the revolution they shell dry and become gradually heated, then be thoroughly baked during their passage over a furnace, and then. gradually cool, till at the completion of the revolution they shall he delivered perfectly burned and serviceable bricks, using for the purpose the apparatus hereinbefore described, or any other, substantially the some, and which will produce the desired eil'ect.
WM. H. TOWERS.
