T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;r
Be it known that I, H. K. SMITH, of Norwich, New London county, und State o f Connecticut, have invented a new und useful Improvement in Sheft-Conplings;". and I do hereby declare that the following-is a. full, clear,
:ind exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the nrt to make land use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specifica-tion,
- The present invention relates toen extremely novel and simple coupling for shnfts,`whereby theycain he readily secured together or released from each otheretpleasure, and, when coupled or fastened, perfectly centred. In accompanying plate of drawings, my'improvement is illustratedi Figure 1 being :L centrill section through the coupling, taken in the direction of its length.
Figure 2,1m transverse vertical section., taken in the lille x x, iig. 1; and
Figure 3, a. transverse section, tf1-ken in the line y y, iig. 1.

A A, inthe dra-wings, represent the ends of two shafts which are to be coupled together. These shafts ure each grooved at in the direction und for a portion oi' their lengths. C, a. sleeve or tube, oi` suiiicient length and size to embrace the ends of the two shafts A, the inside of which sleeve, upon oneV or more sides, and from each end towardsits centre, is provided with two or more-Ways or square-shaped grooves D, having their bottoms or lower sides E made of un inclined or bevelled. shape from a point neer the centre of the sleeve toward each end of the same. In each of these ways or grooves D of the sleeves, Wedge-shaped pieces or blocks, F, are placed, which, by means of ribs G, playv or slide in the grooves B of the shafts, when moved either forward or backward in the sleeve C, by screwing the screw-bolts H in the proper direction therefor. These bolts H each screw into e common nut, I, placed between the two projections J of the interior of the sleeve C, and both poss loosely through the sliding wedge-picces or blocks F.
From the ubovevdeseription it is plain to be seen that turning the screw-bolts Hin the proper direction therefor, lthe wedge-pieces or blocks F may' be brought to beer against the"shefts A,jumtning and tightening the same against the opposite side of the sleeve around the sha-ft or similar blocks F, placed at suitable points therefor, and thus firmly uniting und securing them together. with the centre lines in a, line with each other, as is obvious without further explanation. i v I claim :is new, and 4desire to secureby Letters Patent-'- The shaft-couplingherein described, the some consisting of the sleeve C, having bevelled or inclined ways or grooves D, pieces or blocks F, and screw-bolts H, when combined and arranged together substantially as :md for the purpose specified.
