UMBRELLA-TOP PROTECTOR.

Be it known that LWILLIAM ORLANDO FOR- sYTH,of Trinidad,in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella -Top Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to devices for protecting the tops of umbrellas or parasols and the tops of shades for baby cabs or carriages.

It is well known that the covers of umbrellas and parasols are subjected to considerable wear and frayingat the upper end of the ribs. This is due partly to the strain at such point and partly to abrasion against the umbrellacasing.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive device for protecting such portion of the umbrella or parasol cover.

I will describe a protector embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Referring to the drawings, l designates the protector, made substantially in the form of an inverted cup and having an opening through which the tip of the stick 2 passes. The protector consists of soft rubber or other similar and suitable material, and preferably it is provided with vertical ribs 3 on its outer side. These ribs will not only add strength to the device, but will give it a neat and finished appearance.

The protector may be secured in position by any desired means, such as vulcanizing it directly to the cover 4 or by vulcanizing it to a supplemental cap 5, ot' silk or the like,which maybe glued to the cover material, or it may be secured by wire staples 6, passed through the protector and cover material and then bent around the ribs 7.

To prevent the staples from moving on the ribs, the ribs may be provided with notches 8, in which the staples engage, or with holes 9, through which the staples may pass. The staples may be vulcanized in the rubber, as indicated in Fig. 5.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A protector for the tops of umbrellas and parasols, comprising a cup-shaped body of rubber and provided with external ribs said body fitting upon the tip of the stick and extending down over the cover below the pivots of the ribs, and provided at its lower portion with staples for securing it to the ribs, substantially as herein shown and described.
