Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. FILLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montpelier, in the county of Villiams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarbureting-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable -others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to machines for carbureting air by forcing the same through gasolene or other liquid hydrocarbon, whereby it becomes saturated with the inflammable vapors of the hydrocarbon, so that it may be burned for heating or lighting purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine for the above purpose which shall be simple and economical in construction and which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a central longitudinal section of a carbureting-machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the mechanism for operating the valves of the hydraulic cylinder.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a cylindrical Water-tank open at the top and closed at the bottom and supported by legs 2. Telescoping or fitting in said tank is a vertically-movable tank 3, provided with a cover4 at the upper end and open at the lower end. There is an air-opening 5 in said cover provided with an inwardlyopening flap-valve 6. Secured to the said tank 1 by brackets 7 is a hydraulic cylinder 8, in which works a vertical plunger 9, the upper end of which is provided with a lateral arm 10, secured to the cover of tank 3. At the lower end said cylinder is provided with water supply and outlet pipes l2 and 13, provided with valves 14 and 15. The arm 16 of valve 14 is connected with a vertically-movable rod 17, provided with upper and lower lugs 1S and 19, adapted to be alternately engaged by a lug 2O on the cover of tank 3. The rod 17 is also connected with a lever 21, pivoted to the cylinder 8, the opposite end of which is connected by a link 23 with the arm 24 of valve 15. The rod 17 passes through guides 2'5, secured to tank l.
The numeral 26 designates a tank for containing gasolene or other liquid hydrocarbon. Located in the lower part of said tank 2G is a horizontal pipe 27, provided with a number of perforations and connected with a valve` box 2S, located below the box and provided with a check-valve 29. Connected with said valve-box below the valve is a pipe 30, leading up into a supplemental air-tank 31. Connected with said box above the valve is a pipe 32, provided with a check -valve 34. This pipe 32 is connected with a pipe 35, eX- tending up into tank 1, above the water-level therein. At the upper end of said tank 26 is an escape-pipe 36, provided with a Valve 37, which valve is connected with a lever 38, provided with a number of notches 39, with which is connected a weight 40. This level' is pivoted to a stand 4l and is provided with a rod 42, connected with a valve 43, located in a casing 45. This casing and the casing of valve 37 are connected by a pipe 46. The valves 37 and 43 serve as regulating-valves for automatically regulating the pressure in the burner-pipe.
Telescoping in the supplemental air-tank 31 is a vertically-movable cylinder-47 for the purpose of keeping up a supply of air in the gasolene-tank while the cylinder or tank 3 is moving upward and the air-pressure therein consequently relieved. The tank 31 is provided with a pipe 48, leading up into tank 3. The numeral 49 designatesa check-valve in said pipe.
The numeral 50 designates the burner-pipe, connected with the casing 45 of valve 43.
The operation is as follows: The tank 1 is filled nearly to the top with water and the supply-valve 12 opened to allow water to enter the hydraulic cylinder, elevating the plunger and raising tank 3. The valve in the top of said tank will open as said tank rises to allow air to enter. When said tank has reached the limit of its upward movement, the lug 2O will strike the lug 19 of rod l17 and through the connections Will close valve 12 ICO and open valve 13. The air in said-tank will now be compressed, valve 6 closing, and will be forced to the gasolene-tank. For the purpose of keeping up the pressure in the gasolene-tank while said tank 3 is rising, which will relieve the air-pressure in the latter, I provide the tanks or cylinders 3l and 47. As the tank 3 falls air will be forced into tank 3l, elevating tank or cylinder 47; but when said tank 3 rises to renew the air-supply check-valve 49 will close, so that the compressed air in said tanks 3l and 47 will be forced through the gasolene-tank.
Should the pressure in the burner-pipe become too great or above a predetermined limit, the valve 43 will be forced upward, overcoming the resistance of the weight and depressing the valve 37, so as to partially close the latter and then reducing the amount of carbureted air admitted to the burner-pipe.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In an air-carbureting machine, the combination with the air-tank and means for supplying it with air, the hydrocarbon-tank, the pipe extending up into said air-tank, the pipe connected therewith and with the hydrocarbon-tank provided with a check-valve, the horizontal perforated pipe in said hydrocarbon-tank, the escape-pipe at the upper end of said hydrocarbon-tank provided with a check-valve, the lever connected therewith provided with a weight, the reducing-valve and the burner-pipe, of the supplemental airtank, the pipe connected therewith and extending up into the same, the check-valve therein and the pipe connected with said supplemental tank and with the hydrocarbontank, substantially as described.
2. In an air-carbureting machine, the combination with the air-tank and means for supplying air thereto, the hydrocarbon-tank having the valve-box connected with the lower end thereof, the check-valve therein, the pipe connected with said valve-box above the valve therein, the pipe connected therewith extending up into the air-tank and provided with a check-valve, and the perforated pipe located in said hydrocarbon-tank and connected With said valve-box, ofY the supplemental air-tank, the pipe connected therewith and extending up into said air-tank,tl1e checkvalve therein, and the pipe connected with said supplemental air-tank and with said valve-box below the valve therein, substantially as described.
