SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,373, dated February 28, 1899.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE C. STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Plate Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andl exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l

My invention relates to improvements in photographic-plate holders, and more particularly to the means employed to secure the sensitized plate in the holder; and the object is to provide a simple and efficient device for this purpose.

The invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Similar reference characters indicate like parts of the device in the several views.

Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of a double plate-holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the broken line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the broken line 3 3 of Fig. l.

1 denotes the holder-frame, and 2 the slide, which is provided with the usual iingergrip 3.

4 denotes a locking-bolt snugly iitting an orifice in the frame to permit of an axial and a longitudinal movement therein, and the outer end of said bolt 4 terminates in a lateral arm 5, which is adapted to be turned across the slide-grip 3 to lock it in the holder and also to be turned parallel with said grip to release it when it is desired to withdraw it. A spiral spring 6 encompasses the projecting end of said bolt 4between the arm and the contiguous face of the frame to act as a friction-brake for said bolt to retain it in the position to which it has been placed, and thereby prevent its accidental displacement. The innerend of said bolt is formed with an annular groove 7 to receive the bifurcated end of the shorter arm of the lever 8, fulcrumed on the screw 9, fixed in the frame. The longer arm of this lever 8 is pivoted t0 a short rod 10, extending through a transverse opaque partition '12, iixed in the frame, and the inner end of said rod 10 is iixed to a bar13, which has a limited movement parallel with the partition 12.

14 14 designate semi-elliptical springs interposed between the partition and the bar 13, the tension being exerted to press the bar inwardly and away from the partition. The inner edge of the bar 13 is formed with a longitudinal groove 15 to receive the contiguous edge of the sensitized plate 16.

The operation of the device is as follows The lateral arm 5 of the bolt 4 is turned parallel with the slide-grip 3, which permits the slide to be withdrawn in the usual manner. The sensitive plate is now inserted by first placing its lower end in the usual rabbeted recess in the butt-end of the holder, so that the upper end of the plate will lie against the outside face of the bar 13, the holder being tilted to accomplish this. The bolt 4 is now forced inward, which, through the medium of the lever/S, withdraws the bar 13 from the path of the plate, which now drops in line with the groove 15, and upon releasing the bolt 4 the springs 14 14 force the bar 13 inward, so as to encompass the contiguous edge of the plate and securely retain it in the holder. The slide is now inserted and the bolt 4 turned on its axis, so that its arm 5 will extend across the outer edge of the slide-grip 3 and prevent its accidental withdrawal. At the same time the slide grip 3 acts as a barrier to the bolt 4 to prevent its being accidentally moved inwardly, and thereby release the plate. After the plate has been exposed in the camera the bolt 4 is turned so that its arm 5 releases the slide-grip, and after the slide is withdrawn the holder is tilted with the plate down and the bolt 4 pressed inward, which withdraws the bar 13 from engagement with the upper edge of the sensitized plate, thereby permitting the plate to fall outwardly from the holder and into the hand placed to receive it.

While I have only described the means for retaining one platev and locking one slide in place, it will of course be understood that in ICO a double plate-holder such as I have shown the same parts are duplicated for the other side of the holder.

The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form noW known to me; but many changes in the details might be made Within the skill of a good mechanic Without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims at the end of this speciiication.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination With a photographic-plate holder, the grooved bar 13, the lever Shaving one arm connected to said bar, the bolt 4 conneeted to the opposite arm of said lever, and having its projecting end formed with a lateral arm 5, substantially as speciiied.

2. In combination, the plate-holder, provided With a slide, the bolt 4 formed with a lateral arm 5 adapted to extend across the path of said Slide, the grooved bar 13, and the lever 8 operatively connecting said bolt and bar, substantially as shown and described.
