UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
MATTHEW J. KNAPP, OF GIRARD, OHIO.
BARREL-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 620,331, dated February 28, 1899.
Applicationled .Tune 16,1898.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
.Be it known that I, MATTHEW J. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Platforms, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to movable platforms upon which barrels or similar heavy bodies may be placed and readily and easily transferred from place to piace. It is primarily designed for use in stores-for instance, grocery stores-Where barrels of sugar, tlour,&c., and heavy packages are moved much about, especially where barrels of goods are placed beneath the counters, the goods to be measured out to each customer. With my invention barrels so placed may be withdrawn with ease and readily returned after the desired quantity of goods has been withdrawn.
I will first describe my invention with relation to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan View of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the views the same numeral indicates the same part.
1 indicates parallel frames, preferably of wood, the ends of which are mortised in the parallel struts 2 and firmly secured into place. In each pair of struts '2 are bearings for the spindle 3 of the wheels 4. The axes of the wheels 4 are parallel to the frames l. Consequently their planes of rotation are at right angles thereto.
Mortised into the frame 1, at right angles thereto, are the parallel frames 5, secured in their position by the mortised struts 6 at their ends. Near the ends of the frames 5 and journaled therein are the wheels '7, Whose plane of rotation is parallel to that of the wheels 4. The wheels 7, however, are slightly Serial No. 683,563. (No model.)
less in diameter than the wheels 4, whereby the platform may be tipped to rest' upon either wheel 7 at will, the wheels 4 forming a pivot. y
If it is desired, a round disk or plate (shown 5o by the dotted line) may be secured to the top of the platform, this being desirable in cases where the barrel in use has a weak or damL aged bottom.
A series of small holes are made in the 5 5 frames l vand 5 for the purpose of receiving small pins 8, which will prevent the barrel slipping off the platform by any accident.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
A barrel being placed upon the platform and 6o the pins 8 put into place, the whole may be readily pushed about from the top portion of the barrel. To turn, the load is for the monient balanced upon the larger wheels 4, whenl it may be easily turned in either direction.
Having thus described the details of my invention and shown its operation, what I desire to secure by my Letters Patent and claim is- In a barrel-truck, the combination of two 7o parallel frames, provided with a pair of parallel struts at each end, with two similar frames, also provided with struts, secured to said first-mentioned frames at about their center; a pair of rollers secured between the struts at the end of said first -mentioned frames, and a pair of rollers of a different size secured between the struts at the ends of said last-mentioned frames; and holes, adapted to receive pins, distributed through- 8o out the top surfaces of said frames, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony of which I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two Witnesses, this 18th day of April, 1898.
MATTI-IEW J. KNAPE.
