and lamp stands, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple, cheap, and effective arrangement of this description upon which may be placed a lamp or book and one or more newspapers, or when the lamp is not used the holder therefor may be used as a book-rest; and a further object of our invention is to so construct this stand and the holders thereof as to provide for Various adjustments thereof, so as to bring the books or papers into most convenient positions for reading when a person is either standing, sitting, or reclining.

With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a combined stand made in accordance with our improvement. Fig. 2 is a side View of one of the arms. Fig. 3 is a side view of the book-rack. Fig. 4 is a side view of the slide-block.

In carrying out our invention as here embodied, F represents the base thereof, which is here shown as composed of three legs formed with a socket F, said socket having a set-screw j passed therethrough in order that the upright a may be adj ustably secured within said socket, thereby providing for the raising and lowering of this upright in vary ing the height of the stand. The upper end of the upright a has fitted thereon a head 0, and this head is composed of avertical socket fitted over the end of the upright and held in place by the set -screw 19 and a horizontal socket through which the rod B passes, the latter being held in place by the setscrew P. The rod B has secured upon its outer ends the ferrules H, which in turn support the balls H. These balls have fitted thereon the split sockets E, which may be clampedupon the balls by the set-screws 7a. A post Z is fitted within the upper end of one of the sockets E and is held in place by the set-screw Z0, and this post carries the paper-rack D, said rack consisting of the rod Z and the holder Z the latter being guided by the upturned ends of the rod Z and given a downward tendency by the springs R, fitted upon said upturned ends. The holder Z has portions thereof oifset, as shown at i, and upon these ofisets are journaled the rolls S, which by this arrangement bear upon the rod Z, and thereby serve to hold the papers in place which have previously been inserted between the rod and the rolls, as will be readily understood. The ball H at the opposite end of the rod B has the socket E fitted thereon, said socket being clamped to the ball by the thumb-nut I0 and the upper portion of this socket is adapted to receive the shank m, which projects from the book-rack O. This rack consists of a basestrip having dovetailed grooves 0 formed crosswise therein, and in these grooves are fitted the arms L so as to slide back and forth, and a thumb-nut C is run upon a suitable screw which has formed therewith a head 0 so arranged as to bear upon the edges of the arms, and thereby clamp them in any adjustment. Each of these arms has secured to one end thereof the clip-spring L, by which the book and the leaves thereof are held open, and the adjustment of the arms crosswise of the rack adapt these clips to any width of book within certain limits.

A ledge L is carried by the lower portion of the book-rack, so that the edge of the book may be placed thereagainst, while a springclip 4?. is utilized for holding the central portion of the book upon the rack. A slide-block m is fitted within a dovetailed groove '21. so as to slide therein, and the clip-spring n is secured thereon and is adapted to clamp the central portion of the book at the top thereof upon the rack, and with these four points of engagement it will be seen that a book will be firmly held against displacement and yet may be easily removed when desired and another substituted therefor.

When a book has been secured upon the rack, it may be brought to any desired position by adjusting the ball-and-socket joint, as this will permit the book-rack to be swung sidewise, up and down, or at any desired angle. The same is true of the paper-rack, since the ball-and-socket joint at this point will permit a similar adjustment.

The cross-head O carries a ball 0', and this in turn has fitted thereon the socket E ,which is clamped upon the ball by the thumb-nut k and the upper end of this socket receives the shank of the lamp-holder G, the thumbnut 70 serving to clamp this shank in position.

From this description it will be seen that when a lamp is placed within the holder the light therefrom will fall upon a book supported by the book-rack, as well as the papers carried by the paper-rack, and also give light to the surrounding space, thus making a complete combination of a book, paper, and lampholder which may be used for a variety of purposes and afiord great convenience to all classes of persons, especially invalids.

In'practice it has been found that our improved combination-stand serves all the purposes for which it is intended, and as the construction thereof is simple its cost and manufacture is small, and the simplicity of this arrangement is such as to render its use possible by persons of but ordinary intelligence.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful is-- 1. In combination, a suitable base, an up- 40 right adj ustably secured therein, a cross-head carried by the upper end of the upright, a rod supported by the cross-head in substantially a horizontal position, a ball-and-socket joint carried by each end of the rod, a paperrack consisting of a rod Z, a holder fitted thereon, and rails carried by said holder, a book-rack supported by the opposite balland-socket joint, said book-rack consisting of a back board provided with a dovetailed 5o groove, two arms arranged crosswise thereof and adapted to slide thereon, a ledge against which the edge of the book may rest, a spring clip for holding the lower edge of the book upon the rack, a sliding block fitted in the dovetailed groove formed in the back board, and a spring-clip carried by this block for holding the upper edge of the book upon the rack, a ball-and-socket joint supported by the cross-head, and a lamp-holder carried by the last-named joint, as specified.

2. In combination with a stand of the character described, a book-rack supported thereon by a ball-and-socket joint, said rack consisting of a back board having dovetailed cross grooves therein, and a longitudinal dovetailed groove, arms fitted to slide in said cross-grooves, a sliding block, a spring-clip carried by this block for holding the upper edge of the book, a ledge secured to the back board, and a spring-clip arranged to hold the lower edge of the book, as specified.
