UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ALBERT ST. ALVIN UTT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOLT OR PIPE EXTRACTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,062, dated February 21, 1899.
Application filed May 16, 1898.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT Sr. ALVIN UTT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Bolt or Pipe Extractor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for pulling or extracting bolts, pipes, or similar round bars, and comprises the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
I will describe a bolt and pipe extractor embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a section taken upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the end of the device, the bolt engaged by the device being shown in section.
A lever Ais provided, which may be of any suitable length and has a projecting lug B, serving as a fulcrum. The end of the lever near the fulcrum is also divided or forked, forming two jaws C. From the inner side of each of these jaws projects a pin or bolt F, upon each of which is placed a slotted wedgeblock D. These wedge-blocks have each a longitudinally-extending slot d, adapted to loosely fit over the bolt F and permit a limited reciprocation of the blocks upon said bolts. The lower ends of these blocks are preferably curved inward slightly, as shown at (1', while the upper ends are thickened, as shown at d The ends of the blocks may be and preferably are curved so as to fit about a round pipe or bolt. The ends of the jaws C are also preferably provided with inwardlyextending lugs C, which serve to limit the pivoting action of the blocks D upon the bolts F.
The operation of my device is as follows: The jaw end of the lever is placed over the bolt or pipe E which is to be drawn.
Serial No. 680,855. (No model.)
The wedge-blocks D are raised until they are separated sufficiently to embrace the bolt or pipe. They are then allowed to drop until they closely engage the sides of the bolt. By depressing the outer end of the lever the jaw end will be raised. This will serve first to tightly clamp the blocks D upon the bolt and then to raise the bolt. As the outer end of the lever is raised for a new purchase the blocks D will be freed from the bolt and drop down for a new bite. In this way the bolt may be rapidly extracted. The releasing and clamping of the bolt by the blocks D is entirely automatic.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bolt and pipe extractor, comprising a lever having tWo jaws at one end, abolt proj ecting inwardly from each jaw, and a wedge- 'block mounted to slide upon each bolt.
2. A bolt and pipe extractor, comprising a lever forked at one end to form two jaws, and wedge-blocks pivoted on the inner sides of the jaws and having a limited sliding motion across their pivots.
3. A bolt and pipe extractor, comprising a lever forked at one end to form two jaws, a pivot-bolt projecting inwardly from each jaw, and two blocks having longitudinal slots therein adapted to fit over the bolts, the blocks being thickened at their upper ends so that their outer surfaces are inclined toward each other.
4. A bolt and pipe extractor, comprising a lever having two jaws at one end, a projecting fulcrum extending laterally the bar near the jaws, a bolt projecting inwardly from each jaw, and a Wedge-block mounted to slide upon each bolt.
ALBERT ST. ALVIN UTT.
