UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EMMA O.'LUNT, OF DOVER, NE\V HAMPSHIRE.
CLOTHES-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 619,971, dated February 21, 1899.
Application filed December 8, 1897. Serial No. 661,183. (No model.)
To crZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA O. LUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dover, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in clothes pins or clasps, particularly that class wherein the clothes or articles are suspended from the pin or clasp itself while the latter-is suspended from the line.
It has for its object, among other things, simplicity of construction, readiness of suspending the articles or clothes, and to provide for the putting of the clothes in the pins or clasps indoors and then taking the clothes or articles in the pins or clasps and snapping the latter, with the articles therein, on the line outdoors, the removal from the line of the pins or clasps, with the articles after dried still therein, being readily permitted and the same carried and the articles removed from the pins or clasps indoors, the outdoor discomforts thus being reduced to the minimum.
It consists of a clasp or pin adapted to engage the line and to accommodate or adjust itself to the thickness thereof, and also adapt ed to permit the clothes or articles to be engaged therewith either singly or with one article or piece of clothes attached to each side thereof, or both, all substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the embodiment of my invention I preferably produce or form it of some springy or elastic material or metal, such as is non-corrosive, bending or stamping it up into a pin or clasp form, with its upper end adapted to form a hook or loop to fit over or engage the line, said hook or loop being adjustable, to a certain extent, to the size or thickness of the line. The pin or clasp has pendent portions, with their lower ends or terminals adapted to form the clasp proper. In practice I produce the pin or clasp with two duplicate pendent portions or members, each having a clasp, said members, preferably, being bow-shaped.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred form of my invention, I have shown an elevation of my improved pin.
Referring to said drawing, 1 is the pin or clasp, constructed, as already intimated, of some springy or elastic metal or material, such as is non-corrosive, to avoid discoloring the line or clothes when the same is in use. The pin or clasp is preferably formed of wire doubled upon itself and provided with a downwardly, inwardly, and thence outwardly curved hook or loop 2 at its upper end to adapt it to engage or be sprung over the line in suspending it in position and is securely retained thereon by the innermost portion 2 thereof.
The pin or clasp 1 is twisted at a point 1 intermediate its length for the purpose of strengthening the pendent members 3 3 by decreasing the length thereof, as well as to place them in their proper relation to the upper hook. These members 3 3 are bow-shaped in elevation and extend in the plane of the hook 2. Said members are each provided with an upwardly-extending hook 4, curved inwardly and outwardly and contacting at their inner surfaces, as at 4: with the near surface of the pendent portion, thus forming the clasps proper, in which an article or piece of clothes may be inserted or caught and securely clamped in opposite hooks, as is obvious, or, if desired, two pieces of clothes may be engaged with each pin or clasp, one piece with each hook 4: at one edge, the opposite edges of these pieces being caught or held in the opposite hooks or clasps of two other pins or clasps.
It is obvious that the clothes may not only be held within the clasps or hooks 4, but instead may be retained between the ends 3 by inserting the clothes between the arms and drawing the same downward.
This invention is characteristic for simplicity and is adapted to be readily applied to use.
It will be understood that I reserve the right to Vary the details of the construction and arrangement of parts as herein shown and described without departing from the spirit or principles of my invention and the same yet remain intact.
Having thus fully described my invention,
sitely-extending downwardly and inwardly curved arms bent in the plane of the upper hook, and each bent upon itself near its lower end, forming a hook having an inwardly and outwardly curved portion, whereby the clothes may be retained between the curved inner surfaces of the hooks, or within the hooks, or
both, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
