Be it known that I, \/VILLIAM P. PHILLIPS, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massaohusetts, have invenoed 2m Improvement in Gage-Geeks, of whioh the following descrp tion, in conneetion with the accompanying drawings, is a speeifieation, like letters and figures 011 the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates t0 gage-cocks; and it has for its object the production of a simp1e and eeetve gage-ooek wherein the use of packing is entirely obviated and in whiel1 the aotion is instantaneous and reaclily een trolled.
Figure 1 in front elevation represents a gage-cock embodying my nvention in operative position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof 011 the line x x, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a 1ike "iew showing a modified form of actuator.
I have herein shown the gage-cool; as oomprising a two-part oasing C C, flanged at 2 3 and held together in suitable manner, as by sorews 1, Fig. 1, the part C having a threaded nipple 0 by whioh it is sorewed into the boiler. One of the flanges, as 3, Figs. 2 and 3, is slightly reeessed on its inner face, as at 0, to receive the edge of a cireular flexible diaphragm D of thn sheet metal, whioh is olamped between the flanged edges of the two parts of the oasing, dividing the letter into two st-eam-tight ohambers.
The member C of the oasing has t-herein an exteriorly-threacled boss 0, provided Wlbll a longitudinal bore 0 oommunioatng by the nipple c with the interior of the boiler, and on the inner end of the boss a shouldered seat 0 of preferably non-metallic material, is held in plaoe by a flanged oollar c sorewed upon the boss. A hole 0 in the seat in continuation of the bore of the boss c forrns an inlet-port; for the water or s'neam from the boiler, and normally the daphragm D rests upon the seat, olosing the port.
The memloer C of the easing has a hollow extension C in alinement with the nipple c to receive a plunger cl, having a blook of preferably non-metallic material cZ held in ius end. to beer against the outer side of the diaphragm opposite the seat 0 A sleeve 6 is sorewed into the extension and forms a bear ing 8 for the shank d of the plunger, a spring S surrounding the sl1ank between the plunger and the hearing e '50 normally foree the plunger against the diaphragm.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the sleeve e has en arm 2 on whioh is pivoted al: 6 a handle h, having & hole h, tl1rough which the shank al is ex tencled, a nut 10 on the outer end of the letter preventing clisengagement of the handle and sl1ank, while a spring S is interposed between the handle and sleeve 6. The spring-controlled plunger normally sets upon the diaphragm to press it upon the seat 0 and close the inlet-port 0 against fluidpressure from the boiler; lont by swnging the handle h (0 the left Fig. 2, the aotuator or plunger is drawn away from the diaphragm, whioh is unseated by fluid-pressure opening the inletport. Water or stemn een then pass into the easing and 0111: of the outlet port or nozzle 0 and as the diaphragm is steam-tight no pack ing whatever is required for the actuator or plunge1, whioh is entirely on the opposite side of the daphragm. This is a great convenienoe, for the packing of the actuator 01 valve-controller has been a great source of trouble and inoonvenienoe heretofore in gagecooks.
In order to limit the outward movement of the aetuator, a ring 15 is nterposed between the head d of the aetuanor and the inner end of the sleeve 6, the Wldlll of the ring determining the extent to Wl1ieh the aotuator may be withdrawn in operating the gage-eook.
The construonion shown in Fig. 3 is adapted more particularly for gage-eooks whioh oannot be readily reaohed by the attendants hand, and therein the sleeve e is shown as provided with en arm a on which is pivoted at 6 a lever f, having a toe f 170 engage 21 nut 20 011 the threaded end of the shank, the lever having an eye f X at its outer end for the attaehment of a ohain 01 oord of suibable length. I-Iaving fully deseribed my invention, what I claim, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gage-coek, a casing having inlet and outlet ports, a closure for one of said ports and mounted whin the easing, a springeontrolled aetuator t0 normally maintain said elosure seated against fluid-pressure, means to vary the spring-pressure of the a.ctuator, independent 1neans t0 positively moxe said elosure, and a stop device t0 vary and limit such movement of the actuator.
2. Agage-coek comprising a easing divided into t wo non-eommunicauing ehambers by a flexible diaphragm, one of said chambers having an outlet-porb and a tubularboss constituting an inlet-port, a rernovable perforated seat mounted on the end of the boss adjacent the daphragm, a sliding plunger on the opposite side of the diaphragm in alinement With the boss, a spring to normally press the plunger against the diaphragm and hold it upon the perforated seat, and means t0 positively move the plunger away from the diaphragm.
3. A gage-cock comprisinga casing l1aving inlet and outlet ports and a tubular extension, a flexible diaphragm in the casing interposed between said extension and the ports; a spring-controlled,headed aet1ator movable in the extension and adapted t0 normally engage and force the diaphragm upon the inlet-port, t0 close it, an adjustable sleeve in the outer end of the extension, te vary the spring-pressure, an ann ular stop between the head of the aetuator and the inner end of the sleeve,- to limit movement of the actuator in -opposinion to its spring, and means t0 positively eiect such movement of the actuator t0 release the diaphragm.
