UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CHARLES BRETT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO BARNETT ABRAHAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR FILLING TUBES OR OTHER RECEPTACLES WITH RUBBER SOLUTION, do.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 619,067, dated. February 7, 1899.
Application filed July 6, 1897. Renewed July 9, 1898. Serial No. 685,534. (No model.)
To to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CHARLES BRETT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Filling Tubes or other Receptacles with Rubber Solution and other Substances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines mainly adapted for filling tubes or other receptacles with solution for repairing punctures in tires, but which may also be used for filling tubes with paint, soap, printing-ink, and other substances. In such machines as now generally made the solution is forced into the tube to be filled through a nozzle from a cylinder by means of a piston actuated by a screw, and this construction of machine has the disadvantage that a considerable quantity of the solution escapes and also that loss of time is occasioned in refilling the machine with solution when the cylinder has become exhausted.
Now it is the object of this invention to obviate these disadvantages, and to this end I provide a reservoir for containing the solution, communicating with one end, preferably the rear end, of a cylinder, the piston of which is so constructed that the solution is drawn into the cylinder behind it during its forward stroke and can pass through it to the front of the same during its backward stroke in order that it may be forced through a nozzle on the front end of the cylinder when the piston moves forward for its next stroke. The nozzle, on which the tube to be filled is placed, is pro vided with a valve or cock designed to be operated by a series of levers and links or the like in connection with a piston-rod in such a manner that the said valve or cock is closed immediately the piston starts to move backward, so that as the tube is removed from the nozzle no solution is forced out by the pressure of the piston behind it, thus avoiding all waste.
In some cases I provide the valve or cook with a spring, whereby it is maintained normally closed and is opened by the movement of the handle for efiecting the forward movement of the piston. By this means it will be obvious that the valve or cock is closed immediately pressure is removed from the handle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a machine for filling tubes with rubbersolution or othersubstances 5 5 constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the machine; and Fig.
3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
a is the reservoir for containing the solution, and b is the cylinder of the pump for forcing the solution into the tubes or other receptacles to be filled.
c is a pipe or passage by means of whichthe reservoir on is placed in communication. with the rear end of the pump-cylinder b. Communication can be cut off between the reservoir (1 and the pu mp-cylinder b fromthe exterior by means of a cock d, fitted to the pipe 0, and also by means of a small slidevalve 6, arranged in the reservoir and adapted to be operated by a rod f,which passes through the wall of the reservoir and is provided with an external knob g.
h is the piston, reciprocated by the pistonrod 2', as hereinafter described, and provided with a valve j, arranged to open so as to allow the solution to pass through the piston during its backward stroke.
is is the nozzle, upon which the tube Z to be filled is placed, the said nozzle is being screwed to a connection or neck m upon a sleeve n, adapted to slide between shoulders upon the front end of the pump-cylinder b, the interior of which is placed incommunication with the nozzle 70. through a lateral hole I) in the said 8 5,
cylinder Z) when the sleeve is placed in such a position that the connection m comes opposite the said hole I). The sleeve n is also provided with a hole a, which by partially turning or sliding the sleeve upon the end of the cylinder b can be brought opposite a hole 19 in the under side of the cylinder, so as to allow the solution to escape in a downward direction through the said holes I) and n.
0 is the valve for controlling the escape of 5 the solution from the pump-cylinder b, the said valve 0 being arranged to slide in the front end of the pump-cylinder b and being operated as hereinafter described.
y The arrangement which I provide for recip- 10o
