Description
ENrrED sTArEs PATENT oEEioE.
JOHANNES OBERHAUSSER, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
SPARK-ARRESTING 'FLUE FOR LOCOMOTIVES, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 61.8, dated February 24, 1838.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANNES OBERHAUS- sER, of the city of Charleston, in the State of South Carolina, have invented an Improved Spark-Arresting Flue for Locomotive or other Steam Engines, and that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
In the accompanying drawing A, A, A, is the flue of such size as shall adapt it to the engine. B, B, are enlargements of said flue,
forming chambers, or drums, of three times i Vto secure by Letters Patent isthe diameter of A. In each of these drums there is a partition 0, c, near their lower ends, each of which is perforated with four, or any other number of holes which may be preferred, to receive recurved flues D, D, through which the whole draft is to pass. In arriving at these drums the draft has to pass through two sheets of wire gauze E, E, and at the upper ends of the drumsthrough other sheets of the same material E', E. The upper or recurved ends a, a, of the tubes D, D, are perforated with a number of small holes which may admit a portion of the draft to*pass through, but these should be so small as not to allow the sparks to pass through, all of which sparks will be directed downward by the recurved necks, and from the enlargement of the drums, having the effect of lessening the velocity of the draft, the sparks and cinders will be deposited upon the horizontal partitions o, o, while such as from their lightness may not be so deposited will be arrested by the sheets of wire gauze E, E.
What I claim as my invention and desire The combination of the various parts as herein described, for accomplishing the end proposed; that is to say, I claim the constructing of two or more drums, or Chambers, of greater capacity than the flues, with their partitions, recurved iiues, and sheets of wiregauze all constructed, arranged and combined, as above set forth.
J. OBERHAUSSER.
