WINDOW, DOOR, OR STORE AWNING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,777, dated January 31 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. BUCK, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Window, Door, or Store Awnings, of which the following is a specification.

In the description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure l is a perspective viewof the improved awning extended and applied to a window-frame. Fig. 2 is a front View showing the awning drawn in closely to the frame and covering the entire Window. Fig. 3 is a front View with the awning raised or drawn up to its highest position. Fig. 4 is a front view showing the awning dropped a limited distance from the top, so as to disclose a por tion of the window-frame. I

In said drawings, A indicates a window frame or casing of ordinary form. The cloth cover or awning proper, C, is attached at its upper end to a rod B. This rod is suspended by cords or, (see Fig. 4,) which pass over pulleys I), attached to the top of the windowframe A, and thence down to cleats or studs 0, Figs. 1 and 3. By this arrangement the awning may be held closely in contact with the upper portion of the window-frame or dropped, as shown in Fig. 4, so that when the upper-sash of the window is lowered ventilation of the room is provided without destroying the privacy of the apartment.

D is the main -awning-frame, consisting of the side bars cl and the cross connecting-bar c.

The side bars of the frame D are pivoted to properly constructed fittings f, projecting from the window-frame at or near the middleof the length, and the connecting-bar eis attached in any suitable manner to the bottom of the cover 0 or at a point immediately above the scalloped flap g. Cords it lead from the connecting-bar 6 over pulleysj and then downward to the cleats c. The cords h are threaded or laced through eyelets k in the cover in order that in elevating or drawing up the awning by means of the said cords the folds thereby effected in the cover will be regular in size and shape,and consequently occupy less space than those produced when the cords extend directly from the awning-frame to the pulleys without passing through eyelets, as described.

The awning constructed as described also presents a better appearance when drawn up and does not obstruct light to the same extent or interfere as much with the cleaning of the window.

The awning-cover O has lateral wings E of triangular shape, the points m of which are provided with eyes 11, whereby they may be attached'to hooks 0 on the sides of the windowframe, as shown in Fig. 1. The wings are represented as extended in Fig. 2 to exhibit their conformation.

Before drawing up the awning into the position shown in Fig. 3 the lateral wings E have to be released from the holding-hooks 0, also before the awning can be drawn down into the position shown in Fig. 4.

WVhen the awning is in the position shown 7 cords a are also slackened to allow the awning proper, C, to be lowered at the top. Then the lower end of said awning proper is drawn down until the whole lies straight and flat, as shown.

I claim as my 'invention The combination, with a window or equivalent frame, of the awning comprising the cover or awning proper having lengthwise rows of eyelets, a cross-bar arranged at top of said awning, the frame or bar D hinged to the sides of the window-frame, lacing-cords secured to the free end of said frame and rove through the eyelets, pulleys at the top of the window-frame, and hoisting-cords attached to the said cross-bar of the awning, whereby the awning proper may be lowered bodily and still kept stretched flat, or lowered at the top only and gathered or folded intermediate of the top cross-bar and free end of the hinged bar, as shown and described.
