COMBINED WHIP SOCKET AND REIN HOLDEB.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES GEORGE XV. HYDE, OF ST. PAUL, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED WHIP-SOCKET AND RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,680, dated January 31, 1899. Application filed June 22, 1898. Serial No. 684,158. (No model.)
To all whom ?lt may concrn:
Be it known that I, GEORGE TV. HYDE, of St. Paul, in the county of Howard and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Combined WVhip-Socket and Rein- Holder of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved combined whip socket and rein-holder which is simple and durable in Construction, cheap to manufacture, and readily secured in place for Conveniently and securely holding a whip and the reins for 'teams harnessed to buggies, lumber-wagons,
and other vehicles.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be described hereinafter and thenpointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied, the section being taken on the line l l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a face view of the clamp and gage-rests, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of one of the guideways.
The frame A for carrying the rein-holder and the whip-socket is made of spring metal in saddle form, the side members A A being adapted to straddle a support B for carrying the combined rein-holder and whipsocket. The connecting member A of the saddle-france is adapted to rest on the top edge of the support, as is plainly indicated in Fig. l. The lower member A continues into a spring-loop C, from which rises a jaw D, arranged in front of and parallel to the member A so as to form with the latter a pair of jaws for engaging and securely holding the reins. The upper end of the jaw D is bent forwardly into a ring E to permit of readily placing the reins between the jaws and also to prevent garments from being caught/when a person passes over the device upon enterin g or leaving the vehicle on which the device is applied.
In order to regulate the tenacity of grip on the jaws and to form vertical'guideways fol' the jaws, I provide a clamp with guide-rests. (Shownin detailin Figs. 3and4c.) The clamp G is made U-shaped, with the extreme ends formed into points or prongs adapted to be driven into the support B, and the said clamp is adapted to rest on the outside of the jaw D and is provided at its ends with vertical wedge-shaped guideways G' for the side edges of the jawD. Bolts Gr pass through the clamp G, guideways Gr', and the support B, so as to securely fasten the clamp in place after it has been adjusted. By adjusting the guideways G' up'or down in the clamp G' the space between the latter and the support B can be increased or diminished to give more or less spring action to the j aw D. Each of the guideways is preferab-ly provided with a series of apertures for the bolt G to engage one of them. It is understood that the clamp and guideways may be moved up or down on the two jaws to a desired position, and then the guideways are adjusted up or down in the clamp previous to driving the prongs into position' on the support B.
The 'whip-socket forms an integral part' of the member A' of the saddle-frame A and is formed by bending the lower end of the member A' outwardly to form a bottom H for the socket, the outer end of said bottom continui ing in the outer side H', provided at its side edges with bars H bent inwardly to meet the member A' and complete the socket. Thus the member A of the saddle-frame forms one of the jaws for the rein-holder, while the member A' of said frane, as well as the jaw D, bottom H, outer side H', and bars H are all formed of one single piece of spring sheet metal. i
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A combined whip-socket and rein-holder, comprisin g a frame, a rein-holder hav'ingj aws, one of which is formed by one side of the saddle-frame, and a whip-socket having its inner side formed by the other side of the saddle -frame, substantially as shown and de scribed.
2. A combined whip-socket and rein-holder, comprising a saddle-frame, a rein-holder having jaws, one of which is formed by one side of the saddle-frame, and a clamp and. guide IOO ways for the jaws and adapted to be Secured to the support of the device, substantially as shown and described.
A combined Whip-socket and rein-holder, comprising a saddle-frame, a rein-holder havin g jaws, one of which is formed by one side of the saddle-f'ame, and a clamp and Wedgeshaped guideways for the jaWs and adapted to be Secured to the support of the device, the said clanp being made U-shaped to extend over the front face of the outer jew, and the guidewtys being held adj ustably on the clzunp to engage the side edges of the jaws, substantiliy as shown and described.
GEORGE XV. IIYDE.
