APPARATUS FOR FILLING- OIL-CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,566, dated January 10, 1899.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD DREYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sea Cliif, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented vcertain new andl useful Improvements in Apparatus for Filling Oil-Cans, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for iilling oil-cans of that class which are delivered to customers and exchanged when emptied for full cans and then returned for refilling, said oil-cans having avent-spout the turning of which on the can opens or closes the communicating opening, said filling apparatus bein-g so arranged that a number of cans may be filled at the same time with the exact quantity of oil required in each; and the invention consists of an apparatus for filling oil-cans, which comprises a measuring-tank divided by partitions into as many separate compartments as there are oil-cans to be lled, an oil-supply pipe above said tank, valves in the connecting-pipes between the supply-pipe and the compartments of the tank, a lever mechanism for opening or closing the said valves, discharge-faucets at the lower ends of the compartments of the tank, and a lever mechanism for operating all the stop-cocks of the discharge-faucets at the same time, so as to transfer the contents of the compartments to the cans to be iilled.
The invention consists, further, in the improved faucet for the compartments of the oiltank, so that the spout of the oil-tank can be tightly fitted into the same during the filling up of the tank with oil.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved apparatus for filling oil-cans. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3, avertical transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a side elevation, partly in longitudinal section, of one of the discharge-faucets of my apparatus for iillin g oil-cans. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse i section on line 5 5, Fig. 4; and Figs. 6 and 7, a vertical longitudinal section and a bottom view of the spout' of the oil-cans to be filled.
Similar letters of reference indicate correprovided with a gutter a, that extends around the table near the edge of the same, so as to receive any overow of oil and conduct it oft at a suitable point. The table is supported by suitable legs A. To the table are attached upright pillars A2,'whioh support by suitable brackets an oil tank or reservoir B. The reservoir B corresponds in size to the number of oil-cans to be iilled at one time. In the drawings ten oil-cans are shown. The oil-tank B is divided by suitable partitions into ten compartments each. As these oilcans usually contain one gallon, the quantity of oil supplied to each compartment of the oil-tank B is also one gallon. The pillars A2 support at their upper ends an oil-supply pipe C, which is connected with a main tank (not shown) that is preferably supported on a higher level than the supply-pipe C or with an oil-tank in which the oil is placed under pressure of air, so as to be transferred to the oil-tank B, as required.
Each compartment of the oil-tank Bis connected with the supply-pipe C, which is arranged above the same by a short connectingpipe d. Each connecting-pipe is supplied with a stop-cock or valve d', the handle of which is pivotally connected with a rod D, that extends in front of the handles and that is connected at one end with a fulcrumed lever D', so that by turning the latter the handles of all the connecting-pipes CZ can be opened or closed. In the top'of each compartment of the oil-tank is a vent-hole e, so that the air has free admission to the cornpartments of the oil-tank when filling or emptying the same. At both sides of the oil-tank B are arranged inclined gutters E,which communicate with a pipe E', that leads to a suitable'receptacle, said gu tters serving to receive any overfiow from the compartments that may escape through the vent-holes in case the faucet-holes are not closed at the proper time. The level of oil in the compartments of the oil-tank B may be indicated by means vof a suitable float or other indicator, so that the faucets of the connecting-pipes cl are closed when the oil arrives at a level corresponding to one gallon in each compartment. By Watching the indicator the proper time for closing the faucets of the connecting-pipe d can be readily observed.
The lower ends of the compartments of the ICO oil-tank B are provided with discharge-faucets f. The handles f of the stop-cocks of the discharge-faucets f are likewise pivoted to a connecting-rod F, which is actuated in the same manner as the rod D bya fulcrumed elbow-lever F whenever the faucets are to be opened or closed. The front ends of the discharge-faucets f are each provided with a tubular extension f2, which is provided with a screw-cap f3 at its front end. The tubular extension is screwed into a socket f4 and provided at its interior with a suitable core f5, which is provided with an oblong opening and with elastic washers f6 f7 on both ends of said core. vThe washers fT at the inner ends of the core of the tubular extension have preferably round openings corresponding with the opening in the faucet, while the washers f6 at the outer end of the tubular extension are preferably provided with oblong openings in line with the core. The oblong openings of the core and its washers serve for receiving the oblong end of the spout S on the oil-can,which is so arranged that it may be turned on the oil-can, so as to project beyond the same, in which case the interior of the oil-can is placed in register with the spout, and when the oilcan is iilled it is closed and ready for shipment. The vent-spout and its construction form no part of my present invention. Then the oil-cans are to be lled and the spout is turned into open position, so as to project beyond the body of the oil-can, (in which position it can be readily inserted into the tubular extension of the faucets,) the elastic washers at the front end of the extensions serve to iit tightly onto the end of the spout, so that leakage of oil during the filling of the can is prevented. In case, however, oneof the spouts should not fit properly into the extension of the faucet any drip of oil leaking from the same would be collected in the gutter a of the table and transferred from the same to a suitable receptacle. (Shown in dotted lines in Figs. I and 2.)
My improved apparatus for filling oil-cans is operated as follows: The discharge-faucets are closed by operating the lever f and the valves or stop-cocks of the supply-pipes d opened by operating the lever D. The oil is then supplied simultaneously to all the compartments of the oil-tank B from the supplypipe C until the same are 'filled to the required limit,so as to contain each one gallon of oil or the quantity that is to be transferred into the oil-cans. lVhile the compartments are filled with oil, the spouts of the oil-cans are inserted into the extensions of the dischargefaucets, so as to tightly iit into the same. As soon as the required quantity is transferred in the compartments of the oil-tank B the valves or faucets of the supply-pipe C are closed by turning the handle D', while the discharge-` faucets are closed by turning the lever f. The oil is then transferred into all the cans at the same time. By the tight fitting of the tubular faucet extensions to the spouts of the oil-cans very little, if any, leakage takes place, and the oil is transmitted quickly from the compartments of the oil-tanks to the oil-cans. As soon as the oil-cans are filled the dischargefaucets are closed, the oil-cans are removed from the extensions of the discharge-faucets, and the spouts turned so as to close the openings in the oil-cans, so as to be in position over the oil-cans. The next set of oil-cans are then supplied to the discharge-faucets and the compartments filled again, after which the second set of oil-cans are filled, and so on.
It is obvious that the apparatus can be arranged so as to fill any desired number of oilcans. It may be readily duplicated, so that oil-cans may be lled at both sides of the oiltank, and the discharge-faucets arranged at both sides of the oil-tank, so that a double set 0f cans can be filled at the same time and by the same operations.
The apparatus permits the rapid iilling of oil-cans of that class which are sold to customers and returned after they are emptied. The returned oil-cans can be readily filled and sent out again, the use of the apparatus facilitating the refilling of the cans to a considerable extent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. An apparatus for filling oil-cans, consisting of a supporting-table, an oil-tank divided into compartments and supported above the said table, a supply-pipe, connecting-pipes between the supply-pipe and the upper ends of said compartments, valves or faucets in said connecting-pipes, means for opening or closing said valves or faucets, inclined gutters arranged alongside of the oil-tank, discharge-faucets at the lower ends of the compartments of said oil-tank, means for opening and closing said faucets, and tubular extensions on said faucets provided with packing means for the spouts of the oil-cans, substantially as set forth.
2. In an apparatus for filling oil-cans, a discharge-faucet provided with a tubular extension having a core provided with an opening corresponding to the size of the spout of the oil-can, packings at each end of said core and a cap at the front end of the'extension, the packing at the front of the extension being provided with an opening corresponding and registering with the opening in the core and the sides of the spout upon the oil-can, said cap having an opening considerably larger than the opening in said front packing, substantially as set forth.
