To all whom it may concern :1
Be it known that I, WALTER Soorr, of H00- ot' the contents of reservoir A, so as not to escape. This invention relates to special details of construction of a reservoir or canfor holding and carrying oil or any other fluid, whereby a certain specific quantity may be transferred from the reservoir-chamber to the measuringchamber thereof, and delivered from the latter by the successive acts of changing the position of the can from a vertical to a horizontal and thence to a vertical position, as hereinafter described. The system of construction whereby this is accomplished is shown in the drawings, wherein- V Figure 1 exhibits a vertical longitudinal section of my improved filler, and Fig. 2 exhibits aplan view of the top of the same.
My apparatus consists of a principal reservoir, A, preferably cylindrical, provided with two handlcs C and D. It is also provided with a short tube,,E, provided with a screwcap and Ventorifice, through which the reservoir may be filled, and is located on top of the can,on the same side thereof as handle 0. To
the upper part of the can, and on the side op-- posite handle 0, the measuring-chamber B is attached. This measuring-chamber may be constructed either on the inside or outside of the reservoir, but preferably on the outside, as shown. Communication between reservoir A and chamberB is established through a duct, L, which opens into reservoir A, through the top plate or cover thereof, at the aperture H,
and into chamber B through the port K. The
same object may also be secured by simply cutting an aperture through the wallof cylinder A, at the top thereof, so as to open through between the reservoir and the measuring-chamber, at the very top of the latter. In this way duct L and port K would be dispensed with. From the bottom part of chamber B an eduction or discharge pipe, F, leads across or around the upper part of resefvoir A and terminates with the fillingnozzle G.-*The tube E should overhang the side of the can over'handle C enough that when the vessel is carried by handle O the inlet of tube E will be above the level vent the escape of contents of vessel whenever the can-is manipulated by handle D-as, for instance, in the act of discharging chamber B.
This improved lamp-filler is specially adapted for use in filling street-lamps, where kerosene, gasoline, or similar oils are used, which require to be replenished every day or atstated intervals, and Where it is desirable to supply each lamp with apredetermined amount of oil. In such cases the capacity of chamber B is gaged to the proper capacity to supply a single lamp. All the joints of this can, and its various tubes, pipes, &c., are made air-tight. Whatever vent is required is provided at the top of tube E.
Its mode of use is as follows: Reservoir A is filled, through tube E,.nearl v full, or so as not to pass over through port H into chamber B. The cap of tube E is then screwed on. ,In process of carrying the can from one lamp to another it is transported by handle 0. By reason of this handle being located a little above the center of gravity of the can, the liability of the oil or fluid escaping through tube E or nozzle G is obviated. While the can iscarried in this position the oil descends by gravity through duct L and fills chamber B, rising in discharge-pipe F to the level of the fluid in reservoirA. On reaching the lamp to be filled the can is grasped by handle D and canted over, so that the contents of chamber B may pass down through and out of tubeF into the lamp. Thefiller is held in this position until the contents of chamber B have been drained. By returning the filler to the horizontal position, as when suspended by handle 0, the oil or fluid will again descend through duct L and fill chamber B.
Among the objects accomplished by this device are the following: In lamp-lightingitobviates the necessity of carrying a separate measure for gaging the proper amount of oil to be supplied to each lamp. Besides, it is cleanly in its operation, simple and cheap in construction, and etficient in all respects.

A lamp-filler composed of a supply-reservoir provided with two handles arranged for controlling the manipulation of the tiller, sub- ICO stantially as specified, and a measuring-chamber attached to one side of said reservoir, at or near the top of the same, and communicating therewith by means of a duct, as shown, located on the side of the supply-reservoir, opposite the handle provided for carrying the can in a horizontal position, and provided with a discharge-pipe leading from the bottom of said chamber through or around the supply-reser- Voir, and having a delivery-nozzle at or near the top of the reservoir, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. A lamp-filler having a measuring-chamber connected by means of a duct or aperture with the supply-reservoir thereof, and attached to said reservoir at or near the top,but at one side thereof, and provided with a carrying-handle arranged and disposed so as to facilitate the flow of the contents of the reservoir into the measuring-chamber when the filler is car- 29 ried by such handle, and also provided with a decanting-handle, whereby said filler may be carried in a vertical position, or by tilting over in the direction of the discharge-nozzle the contents of the measuring-chamber may 2 be discharged without any of the contents of the supply-reservoir at the same time escaping, substantially as described and set forth.
