UNITED STATES PATENT Grrrcn.
SYDNEY JOHN FETT, OE REDRUTII, ENGLAND.
v WASHING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 617,405, dated January 10, 1899.
Application led April 16, 1898.
.To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SYDNEY JOHN Pn'rr, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Redruth, in the county of Cornwall, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to washing machines in which a rotary cylinder or tumbler is employed; and the object is to provide a washing-machine of this type which is so constructed as to perform its work quickly, easily, and effectively. p
A further object is to provide a washingmachine which is simple in construction and economical to manufacture.
The invention consists of a washing-machine constructed substantially as hereinaf ter described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specilication, of which the accompany,- ing drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which-- Figure l is a-ver'tical longitudinal central section of a washing-machine constructed in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse central section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the tank or body portion of the improved washing-machine, which may be of any suitable or preferred shape and which is supported upon suitable standards, as is usual in such structures.
A shaft B is journaled in the ends of the body portion or tank and is provided upon one or both ends with means for imparting a rotary motion thereto. Stuffing-boxes b are provided at the journals, so as -to render the body portion water-tight. A cylinder or drum D,- which is preferably round or hexagonal in form and is constructed of end disks d, which are united by means of rods or bars d', is fixed upon said shaft B. These rods or bars are constructed in the form of helical coils; but they do not pass entirely about the circumference of the cylinder. As shown, they complete approximately half the circumference;
serrano. 677,818. (Nomad.)
but it is obvious that the degree of curvature may be varied considerably. The cylinder is provided with a casing or envelop C, of metal, which is secured upon the outside of the helical rods or bars CZ and which is provided with suitable perforations to aord an escape for the water which passes through the clothes and to carry the same to the tank.v
If desired, a number of ballsE may be placed within the cylinder between the clothes to keep them open for the water to freely pass through, and also t0 press the clothes gently against the bars.
A suitable cover F is hinged to the cylin der and provided with fastening 1neans,wherel by access may be had to the interior of the cylinder. The helical bars operate to raise the water in the drum from the bottom to the top about the clothes and thus complete the washing operation quickly and thoroughly. By reason of the packed journals it is possible to fill the body portion above the line of the shaft.
In the operation of the device the clothes or other articles to be washed are placed in the cylinder or drum D, and the water is also poured thereinto, and said cylinder or drum is revolved, and in this operation the clothes and the water therein are constantly agitated, the balls E facilitating this operation. The perforations in the cylinder or drum D furnish means of circulation between said cylinder or drum and the tank A. Hence when the device has been sufficiently operated, as above, the water may be drawn off from the tank and fresh water pouredinto the cylinder or drum as desired.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patentl. In a washing-machine, the combination with a suitable tank, of a rotatable drum or cylinder mounted therein and composed of ends or heads connected by spiral rods or bars, and a perforated casing which incloses said rods or bars, substantially as shown' and described.
2. In a washing-machine, the combination with a suitable tank, of a rotatable drum or cylinder mounted therein and composed 0f ends or heads connectedby spiral rods or bars, and a perforated casing whichl incloses said IOO rods or bars, and a plurality of balls or Spherical bodies placed in said drum or cylinder, and operating` in connection With said spiral rods or bars substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention l have signed my name, in pres- 4ence of the subscribing Witnesses, the 29th clay of March, 1898.
SYDNEY JOHN PETT.
Titnessesr GILBERT H. OHILCOTT, FREDERICK TRUSooTT.
