To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CRAWFORD D. CHAL-v FANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thornport, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Threshing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to threshing-machines; and it consists in an attachment for such machines which will take the tailings from the tailing-spout and rethresh them and return them to the cleaning devices without again intermingling them with the straw going through the machine.
It more particularly consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the descriptive part of this specification and the claims following, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a threshing-machine with my invention attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section. Fig. 4 is a partial vertical section of my device made longitudinally of the machine. Fig. 5 is a like view taken transversely of the machine, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section of the fan-casing and its eduction-tube.
The mechanism included in my improved mechanism is all compactly arranged within a single inclosing structure or casing and is provided with attaching means whereby it can be readily attached to or removed from any one of the various forms of threshingmachines now in use. This mechanism consists of the elevator O, which has its lower end connected to the threshing-machine, so
as to receive the tailings of the machine. This elevator carries the tailings up and delivers them to the rethreshing-cylinder D, where the tailings are subjected to the action of said cylinder, and are then delivered to the fan E, which drives the same into the threshing-machine upon the grain table or floor or der.

These devices (the elevator, the cylinder, its concave, and the fan) may be of any preferred form which will accomplish the results sought to be attained. The fan and cylinder and concave are located in the main trunk A of the casing and the elevator is inclosed in the part B of the casing. The fan-casing is provided with the eduction or discharge spout e, as best shown in Fig. 6, and this spout extends through the side of the machine a sufficient distance to insure that the grain coming within the action of the fan shall be deposited upon the grain table or floor and shall not fall between the same and the side of the machine. c is a deflecting-plate to carry the tailings discharged by the elevator upon the cylinder D,

From the foregoing description the operation of the device will be apparent to any one skilled in the art to which it relates.
The ordinary method of treating the tailings is to carry the same by an elevator and discharge the same into the threshing-cylinder of the machine, from whence it is discharged along and intermixed with the straw passing rearward from the threshing-cylin- The tailings include unthreshed grainheads and grainin a more or less imperfectlycleaned condition, and the intermixing of the same with the straw not infrequently results in a portion of the grain being carried over with the straw.
In order that the grain as it issues from the discharge-spout may not be carried beyond the grain table or vfloor by the force of the blast of the fanE, I prefer to provide the inner end of the spout with a pivoted deflector e A short arm attached to the said deflector is connected with a rod e and extends to the outside of the threshing-machine or to the outer side of the attachment where it is provided with a hand or wheel nut or other means for adjustment.
