SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,814, dated December 2?, 1898-.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SERENA G.SUTPH1'N, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, (Brooklyn,) county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread- I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to an improvement in thread-holders; and the object thereof is to provide a simple durable device to protect the thread used in embroidering from being soiled by dust and to prevent effectually the snarling of the threads.

In embroidering, different skeins of thread are used, and it is desirable to have all together, yet so separated that one thread can be withdrawn from the skeins without disturbing the others. This invention accomplishes this and will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 0c 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a crosssection on the line y y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 shows the wire hook used in drawing the skein through the tubes.

In the practice of my invention I employ a base portion-A, of wood, papier-mach, celluloid, or acombination of suitable materials. Knobs or legs a of any other approved design are fixed upon the under side of said base portion inany approved manner. These legs and the base portion A may be ornamented in any desired style and finish. Upon one end of said base portion A and extending transversely across the upper face thereof is the plate B, fixed to said base portion in any approved manner, and upon which are mounted a series of studs 19, preferably formed integrally with the plate B and of any material suit-able for the purpose. Upon the upper face of said base portion A are fixed, by any approved means, a series of tubes 0, which are preferably constructed of celluloid, but may be made of any material suitable for the purpose. These tubes are open at both ends and are preferably circular in cross-section.

The tubes 0 are so arranged upon the upper face of the base portion A that one end of each tube is opposite one of the studs 1).

The hook D, of wire, of a length a little greater than the length of the tubes is used for the purpose of drawing the skeins through the tube 0. The skeins being cut, the hook is passed through one of the tubes 0 and the point thereof hooked in the bight of the thread and the thread thereby drawn through the tube. The bight is then hooked over the stud b opposite its inclosing tube. The operation is repeated with the different-colored threads until all the compartments-or tubes are filled. More than one skein may be inserted in one tube, if necessary or desirable. All the skeins of thread having been placed in their respective tubes, one thread may be withdrawn without disturbing the others, and at the same time the thread is fully protected from dust in the atmosphere, which tends to soil threads of a delicate tint.

It is obvious that I may increase-the number of tubes and studs, should it prove desirable, and obvious also that any form of or= namentation may be employed to improve 8e the appearance of the device and make it an attractive ornament for the work-table.

Pins may be used in place of the studs shown, if desired; but those shown are pre ferred at this time. 8 5

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let* ters Patent, is-

1. An improved thread-holder embodying a series of tubes arranged in parallel relation 0 to each other, and a base-plate supporting said tubes to which they are fixed, said tubes being adapted to hold one or more skeins of thread each, substantially as shown and de= scribed.

2. An improved thread-holder embodying a series of tubes fixed upon a base-plate in parallel relation to .each other, a series of pins or studs mounted upon said base plate, each pin or'stud being positioned opposite I00 one end of its respective tube, said pins or studs being adapted to retain the bight of skeins of thread passed through said tubes, substantially as shown and described.

3. An improved thread-holder embodying a series of tubes fixed in parallel relation to each other upon a base-plate, said base-plate being mounted upon suitable legs of ornamental design, a plate fixed upon one end of said base-plate, a series of studs formed integrally with said plate and positioned opposite one end of the tubes, each stud being adapted to receive and hold the bight of a skein or skeins of thread previously passed through its corresponding tube, and a hook of Wire adapted to draw the skeins through the tubes, substantially as shown and described.
