13e it known that I, WILLIAM WILKINSON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at lordsrvorth House, Highfield road, Saltley, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements Relating to Tubes for Cycle Construction or Like Purposes, of which the following` is a specication.
This invention relates to the manner in which I strengthen or stiften tubes of aluminium and other metals and adapt them for cycle construction and for like purposes.
In the application of my invention I insert Within each tube a core of elm or other suitable Wood extending the Whole length of the tube or, in the case of soft metals, beyond the same. I then draw the tube and its core together through a die of such dimensions as to compress both the tube and the core and, in the case of a soft-metal tube, to elongate the latter to the full length of the core, thus consolidatin g each and'eftectually securing them together. In this manner I strengthen or stiften the light metallic tube Without unduly adding to its Weight.
In the construction of cycle-frames and the like with my stiftened tubes I preferably secure the ends of the tubes to the lugs or brackets by means of jointing pins or pegs passing through the lug or bracket and also through the tube with its Wood core, and I employ such a method of jointing either With or Without brazing or soldering.
In the two accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings, Figure l is a sectional end elevation, and Fig. 2 a sectional side elevation, of a cycle bottom bracket with Wood-core aluminium frame-tubes jointed thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the bottom bracket A is formed from a length of aluminium tube having a Wood core such as hereinbefore described. I drill or form an aperture within the bracket for the reception of the seat pillar or tube B, and at the required angle thereto I drill another aperture in the bracket, which passes right through the seat tube or pillar B for the reception of the bottom tube C. In like manner the backstay-tubes are inserted Within suitable apertures formed in the bottom bracket. The central tube E, inserted Within the bracket, passes right through the two backstay-tubes D and also the tubes B and C, as illustrated, and the ends of such central tube are secured to the steel socket-pieces F,Which receive the ball-bearing cups. Each of the tubes is forced tightly into the required position on the Wood-core bottom bracket A; but to further secure the parts together I employ bolts, pins, or rivets, as G, with end plates H.
Having non7 described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the cycle bottombracket tube A having a Wood filling, of the wood-filled tubes B and C having their ends inserted in holes in the tube A and its lling, the Wood-filled backstay-tubes entering holes in said tube A and its filling, the tube E for the axle entering axially through the filling of tube A and the bolts or rivets passing through the tubes and Wooden'llings substantially as described.
