.a'rnnr W THOMAS J. FIELDER, OF XVEBSTER CITY, IOWA.
TRANSFORMABLE WAGQN- BOXi SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,528, dated December 2'7, 1898.
Application filed October 18, 1898.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. FIELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vebster City, in the county of Hamilton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Transformable XVagon-Box, of which the following is a specification.
Myobjectis to provideawagon-box adapted for all the common purposes of such boxes and also adapted to be adjusted for loading and hauling wood, hay, straw, &c., advantageously thereon.
My invention consists in the arrangement and combination of auxiliary side-boards having fixed end pieces at their ends with a wagon box of common form having fixed brackets at its sides, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end portion of a wagon-box having the auxiliary hinged side-boards and their fixed ends in their normal positions as required for hauling potatoes, grain, and other farm products in bulk. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of my box, showing by dotted lines the positions of the hinged side-boards and the end pieces fixed thereto, as required for hauling wood, hay, &c., thereon.
The letters A and A designate the parallel sides of a wagon-box of common form.
B and B are auxiliary side-boards hinged to the top edges of the boards A and A in such a manner that they can be turned outward, as indicated by dotted lines. It is obvious they may vary in width, as desired, and hinged to the boards A and A by means of any suitable hinge-irons.
At the ends of the boards 13 and B are fixed end pieces 0 and 0 that are straight at one edge and tapering at the other, so that when Serial No. 693,878. (No model.)
they overlie each other and the ends of the box, as shown, they close the spaces between the ends of the auxiliary side-boards that are hinged to the main side-boards A and A Angle-irons D are fixed to the corners produced by the combination of theend pieces 0 and O with the hinged boards B and B Brackets F are fixed to the outside faces of the boards A and A to extend laterally to support the hinged boards 13 and B when turned outward, as required, to widen the top of the box and to retain the end pieces 0 and C at the corners of the box in a vertical position to adapt the complete box to serve as a rack for hauling wood and hay, as well as for potatoes and grain in bulk.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, its practical utility will be obvious to farmers and others that have experience in the use of farm-wagons.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent therefor, is-
1. In a wagon-box, auxiliary side-boards hinged to the top edges of the main side-boards and end pieces, straight on one side and tapering at the other, fixed to the ends of the said hinged boards, for the purposes stated.
2. A transformable wagon-box comprising parallel side-boards and end-boards fitted thereto, brackets fixed to the outside faces of the said boards, auxiliary side-boards hinged to the tops of the main side-boards and end pieces straight at one edge and tapering at the other fixed to the ends of the hinged boards, arranged and combined to operatein the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
THOMAS J. FIELDER.
