DISH-WASHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 616,372, dated December` 20, 1898. Application filed June 27,1898. Serial No. 684,569. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that I, HIRAM H. TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dish -Wrasheis of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved dish-Washer having for an object, among others, to provide an apparatus simple and economical of constructionwhich is easily operated and will efficiently wash the dishes; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed outin the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the dish-Washer, the plunger being lraised in position for draining the dishes or for inserting the same or removing them from the Washer. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the parts in position for operation. Fig. illustrates-the plunger in detail. Figs. 4c and 5 illustrate in detail the construction of the pitman and the connection of same With the plunger-column, and Fig. G is a detail view illustrating the leverpivot.

In carrying out my invention I provide a body or tank A of sufficient size for the purpose, and upon this tank I provide at B for the pivotal connection of the lever C, this being preferably effected by means of an upright B', having an elongated slot which receives an elongated head C on the end of the lever C, the head being inserted through the slot and the lever being then given a quarter'- turn into operative position, the lever being thus held to and pivotally connected with the upright, so it cannot become detached therefrom when the lever is in position for use.

The plunger D has a body portion which is fitted to and moves up and down in the body A and is provided with a rim D, which is shown imperforate, and With a bottom D2, which is perforated at D2, as shown. On' this bottom is mounted the column E in the form of a tube which is perforated at E', open at its lower end and has at such end an enlarged collecting-chamber E2, whose Walls are preferably tapered and which operates to contain a comparatively large quantity of water as compared with the area of the column and so causes Water to be concentrated at the base of the column and forced up the same when the plunger is depressed, the water so forced being discharged through the openings in the column in small streams onto the dishes in the body A. At its upper end the column E has an outwardly-dared conical head F, perforated at F', so it may discharge Water down upon the dishes, and the edges of this head F are flanged over the edges of the cap-plate G, presently described, and so serve to secure the cap-plate rigidly in position on the column.

On the base-plate of the plunger I provide a circular rib H, which encircles the central column and is arranged a suitable distance therefrom to properly hold small dishes edgewise, so they will bear at their upper edges against the column. In operation if the dishes be placed in the plunger and the same be operated up and down in the Water in the body A the dishes will be quickly cleansed, and the plunger can then be lifted and supported by the prop I in the position shown in Fig. l. This prop I is a length of Wire pivoted at I' to the handle, bent at its other end to form a fork I2 to engage the edge of the body A, such fork also operating as a spring to bear against the handle When the prop is folded against such handle and rested in the hook I3, as shown in Fig. 2, thus steadying the prop in position.

In connecting the lever with the plunger I prefer to provide the cap-plate G with the arallel iiat ears G having the cross or conneoting pin G2. A pitman J is connected at one end J With the lever and has an opening J2 near its other end, in which the cross-pin G2 fits loosely, and a slot J 2 forms a contracted passage which leads to the opening J2 and permits the insertion and removal of the pin G2. The pitman below the opening J2 and slot J3 is extended laterally and is arranged at its opposite lower corners J 4 to abut the cap G and so prevent the accidental disconnection of the pitrnan, it being necessary in order to detach the pitman to have the slot J 2 approximately parallel with the plate A, as otherwise the corners J4 will bear againstthe cap-plate G and lock the pin in the opening J2. At the saine time the pitman can be readily detached by adjusting the parts to the proper relation, as will be readily understood from the drawings.

Having thus described Inyinvention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a dish-washer, the combination of the plunger, a cross rod or pin connected thereto, the lever, and the pitnian pivotally connected to said lever and having an opening loosely receiving said cross-pin, the lower end of said pitnian being formed with extended corners J4, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. Adisli-washer consistingof thebody, the plunger movable therein and having a perforated bottom plate, a side or rirn and an upwardly-projecting perforated tubular column having atits lower end an enlarged collecting-chamber whereby to collect and force water up the 'column on the descending stroke of the plunger, the upwardly-projecting circular rib on the bottom surroundingthe tubular column, and means for operating the plunger, substantially as set forth.

3. An apparatus substantially as described comprising the plunger having the central tubular column, the cap held to the upper end of said column and provided with ears and with the cross-pin connecting the same, the lever and the pitman connected with said lever and fitted between said ears and having an opening to receive the cross-pin and a slot forming a contracted passage leading to said opening, the pitrnan below said opening and slot being extended laterally and arranged to abut the cap whereby to prevent the accidental disconnection of the pitman in the operation of the plunger, substantially as set forth.

4. In a dish-Washer, aplunger having a bottom plate and a tubular column perforated for the passage oi" the water, open at its lower end and having at such end an enlarged collecting-cha-m ber, the upper end ofthe column being closed and having an outwardly-flared funnel-like portion, substantially as setforth.

5. A dish-washer substantially as described comprising the plunger', the body or tank, the lever having a prop-securing hook, a prop pivoted at one end to the lever and having at its other end a fork to engage the edge ofthe body, the prop being rested in folded position in the hook on the lever and having its forked end bearing against such lever, substantially as shown and described.
