Description
osvvALD RoTHE, oF PHILADELPHIA,
PATENT OFFICE.v
PEYNNSYLVANIA,-ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALF TO PAUL ROTHE, OF SAME PLACE.
OXIDIZING DEVICE FOR DYERS USE.-
sPEcIFIcATIoN forming para er Lettere Patent No. 616,018', dated December 1s, 189s.
Application tiled March 28, 1895.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, OSWALD ROTHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oxidizing Devices for Dyers Use; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the art of dyeing, and more particularly to the dyeing` of cotton goods a fast black. In this process of dyeing after the articles have been immersed in the dye liquor the proper time they are then removed, and after they are sufficiently freed from liquor they are exposed to the action of air at a given temperature for a considerable period. This is termed oxidizing I have devised a machine for use in this process to facilitate this operation. In the. ordinary carrying out of the process the articles are hung up in a closed room, which has in it or connected with it a means for heating the air in the room to the desired point. This occupies a number of hours, and it is requisite that the temperature should be maintained substantially constant during the entire period, as a failure to do this will result in an imperfect coloring or in' injury to the goods themselves.
By the use of my device I am enabled to shorten the period usually required to oxidize the dye, and thus obtain more certain and uniform results.
In the drawings, Figure l is a View of my improved device for fast-black dyeing. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view.
In the figures, A indicates the main supporting-frame, having as a part of it standards a ct. These standards are provided at the top with bearings ct a', in which are journaled the trunnions or gudgeons a2 a* of my oxidizing-cylinder B. This cylinder is composed of end pieces b l?, which are connected by strips b b', over which is placed wire cloth or netting b2. I provide a door B' to give acseriei No. 543,462. (No miei.)
cess to the interior of the cylinder. This door is hinged at one side and'has at its opposite side a means for securingit and keeping the cylinder closed. The strips b b are provided with pins or projections b3, extending toward the center of the cylinder'.
The trunnions or gudgeons may be secured to the cylinder in any preferred way. I have shown them as formed with or secured to disks co3 a3, which are secured to the ends b of the cylinder. One of the gudgeons is extended beyond its bearing and is provided with one or more band-pulleys, by which a slow revolving motion is given to the cylinder.
In operating my device in the ordinary oxidining-room the articles to be operated on are placed in the cylinder. The door B is then closed and the cylinder put in motion. As it revolves, the articles are carried up by the pins b3, and they are then dropped to the bottom of the cylinder. These movements of the articles cause the air to act more quickly and eectively upon the dye and shortens the operation of oxidizing.
The cylinder may be constructed of different'materials than heretofore stated. The exteriorl covering of the cylinder may be of perforated wood or sheet metal; but the construction described is preferred, as it provides the freest ingress and egress of air to and from the interior.
In place of the pins b3 I may make the strip b of considerable width, set radially; but the form shown is preferred, and I prefer to set the pins of one strip intermediately of the pins of the next adjacent strip.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In combination with an inclosing structure provided with an inlet for air at a regulated temperature, of a revoluble pervious cylinder provided with inwardly-extending projections, substantially as described.
2. A device for facilitating the oxidation of fast-black dyes, consisting of a closed chamber containing a revoluble pervious cylinder, provid ed with inwardly-extendi ng projections, said projections being located. in
