JAMES M. WILLIAMS, or*coNNEasy-ILLE;:INDIAN-A.
l Lafer; Marzo. 61,592, dmoz January 29,1867.
IMPROVEMENT-1N Brown-is.
Be it known .that I, JAMES M. WILLIAMS, of Connersville, in Fayette county," Indiana, have inventedanew and useful Improvement in Rotary Blowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. Figure 1 represents'the end of my rotary blower, withthe two pnions on the projecting ends of the shafts.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the blower and its case, with the openings in the latter, and tho angular dedector. -V
In the accompanying drawings, A indicatesthe case, andB B are the fans. Each of the fans is provided with a shaft C, journaled in the heads or ends of the 7case A, and are provided with pinions meshing together at one or both ends of 'the case, and exterior thereto. The fans consist ofl three vaneseach, which lranes are cylindrical at their extremities, forming a semicircle and between the three vanes there lis a semicircular depression corresponding in size and form with the vanes b Z b. The cas'eAis closed except the apertures for the ingress and egress of the air. v In iig'. 2, the two fans, or sets of vanes, lare represented. within the blower-case, and are so arranged as toworl; in close` proximity as they revolve in thedirection indicated by the arrows. The case A'portion of cach end ofthe case near its bottom is left open for the free `admission of the air, and an angular defiecting board is arranged cc-n` trally under the blower.` The object of this deecting board d is to -dleiiect the current of air generated by the vanes b b b, as they move together downwardly through the centre of the case .'A. The edges of the deilecting board extend towards and may be made to pass within the casing, but there must be a slot for `theadmission of the air between them. The egress pipe f is placed centrally at the top of the case. The blower may be Ydriven by a pulley` on the-end of one of the projecting fan shafts.
The operation of my improved blower is `as follows: Iowerbeing applied' tothe fan shaft, thcfanfs revolve outwardly from the bottom of the case, and enclosc'a body of air by the action of each vane, between the vanes and the easing, carrying it around to the egress pipe, where the vane meshes like the cogs of a pinion into the semicircular space between them; and as they continue 'to revolve the vanos move downwards in the arc of a circle through the centre 'of the case, when they each move outwardly to gather and carry forward another body of air to be discharged at the egress pipe The use of six vanos in a case, in the manner of my invention,
causes a cntinuousiregular blast of air to be ejected from the egress pipe; whereas a less numberof vanos will cause anirregular and intermittent blast. another advantage o f the use of the three-vaned fans is in the 4trciugh-shaped spaces between the vanos, which serve as retainers ot' air, as they have a capacity to gather and retain the air, which effect cannot be attained by a-less number of vanes on a single shaft. The deiiectng board d, of angular form, serves to deflect the current' ofair generated by the' downward movement of the vanes,- and causes it to be directed into the space between any tw'oof the'vanes andthe casing, as the vanes begin their ascent from the bottom of the case.v p
Y Having now fully described my improvement in blowers, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Theconstruction of the three-varied fans B B, used in combination with the semi-cylindrical case A, having openings at the ends for the admission of air; and the 'deecting board d, arranged Aso as to leave a. slot for the admission of air between it and the case A, operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.v
In testimony whereof I. have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of Maj/,1866.
J. pM." WILLIAMS.
