" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ENGLUND, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
MUSIC-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,480, dated December 6, 1898.
Application filed February 28, 1898. Serial No. 671,884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ENGLUND, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Minne apolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved music rack or holder especially adapted for application to a persons knee; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved rack or holder applied in working position to a persons knee. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the rack as folded, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the rack opened up.
1 indicates the leg of a person assumed to be using the rack, with the rack applied in working position.
2 indicates by dotted lines a sheet of music.
In this preferred construction the rack or holder comprises as follows: 3 and 4 indicate a pair of parallel metallic strips, set with their cross-sections approximately at right angles to each other and connected at their ends by a pair of wire sections 5, the lower ends of which are turned upward, as at 6, so that they will serve to hold the music book or sheet opened up. 7 indicates folding extension-arms pivoted one to each end of the strap 8. The holder thus formed is supported by an oblique leg 8, the upper end of which is formed with a shoulder 9, and is hinged to the upper edge and central portion of the strap 3 by hinge 10. To the lower end or foot portion of the leg 8am elastic band or strip 11 is secured, and the ends of this elastic section 11 are connected by a non-elastic cord or connection 12. When the rack is opened up for use, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the supporting leg 8 is locked in its supporting position by means of a hook or pivoted keeper 13, which is pivoted to the strip 3 and engageable and disengageable, by pivotal movement, with the adjacent edge of said leg 8.
The device is applied in working position, as shown in Fig. 1, by placing the elastic strap 11 over the knee and the cord or connection 12 under the instep of the shoe or foot, in which position the rack is securely held by the elastic tension of said band 11.
This device is intended and is particularly adapted for use by persons when playing a guitar, banjo, mandolin, or similar instrument which is held in the lap. This rack will permit the player to cross his knees, if desired.
When the rack is out of use, it may be readily folded, as shown in Fig. 2. This device is of very simple construction, eificient for the purposes had in view, and can be sold at a profit at a very small cost.
It will of course be understood that various alterations in the specific details of construction above described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. A music rack or holder comprising the strips 3 and 4 connected by the side pieces 5 having the integrally-formed upturned sec-.
2. The combination with the music rack or holder consisting of the strips 3 and 4 connected by side pieces 5 having extensions 6, the oblique supporting-leg 8 hinged to said strip 3 and securable by the pivoted hook 13, of the elastic band 11 secured to the foot of the leg 8 and provided with the nonelastic section 12, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN EN GLUND.
