Beit known that I, HYMAN DIAMOND, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the followingis a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sewing-machines; and the object thereof is to provide an improved machine of thisclass, a further object being to provide means for increasing the speed of the needle orthe movement thereof without increasing the speed of the powershaft or the drive-wheel mounted thereon and for correspondingly increasing the speed or ism for feeding the fabric beneath the pressure-foot; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the practice of my invention, reference being made to Fig. 1 of the drawings, I provide a frame of the usual form, which consists of a base-plate A, the bottom of which is provided with side and end iianges a., and secured to or formed on one end of the baseplate in the usual manner is a hollow upright or standard a2, with which the hollow arm 0.3 is connected. The arm 0.3 is provided at its outer or free end with a circular head c4, above and below which are angular extensions a5,
and formed in the outer side of the circular head is a circular chamber a6.
Passing longitudinally through the arm a3 is a main power-shaft B, on the outer end of which is mounted the drive wheel b, and mounted on the shaft B, adjacent to the outer side of the hub of the drive-wheel, is a collar b2, which is keyed or screwed to said shaft and revolves therewith. This feature of the construction is best shown in Fig. 14, and the drive-wheel Z) is revolubly mounted on the shaft B, and the collar b2 is provided with a spring-operated lug b3, which is adapted to enter a notch or recess b4, formed in one side of the hub of the drive-wheel b, and when said lug is located in said notch or recess the drive-wheel will also be keyed to the shaft or to the collar b2 and will revolve with the shaft.
In practice the shaft B will be operated by a belt or band in the usual manner, said belt or band being mounted on the inner end of the hub of the drive-wheel in an annular VICO groove b5, and I also provide means for revolving said shaft by hand, which comprises a casing h6, which is supported by an arm b7, which is secured to the standard a2 or to an arm 68, secured thereto or formed thereon, and mounted in the upper part of the casing b, which may be either oblong or circular in form, is a pinion D, the shaft of which eX- tends through the casing b9 on both sides and is provided at its inner end with a crank-arm d, which is secured thereto and which is provided at its outer end with an inwardly directed or pivoted arm d2, which is adapted to enter a slot or opening in the drive-wheel b, and adjacent to the pinion D is mounted a gear-wheel cl3, to the outer side of which is secured an outwardly-directed arm d, to which is pivoted a crank-lever d5, provided with a handle d, and secured to or formed on the outer side of the gear-wheel cl3 opposite the arm d4 are two outwardly-directed armscl7, between which the crank-lever d5 may besecured, and said crank-lever is provided with a circular opening cls, through which the hub d? of the gear-wheel di passes, when the said crank-lever d5 is keyed or locked to the arms cl7, as shown in Figs. 1 and 14. The operation of this device will be readily understood, and it will be apparent that when the gear-wheel d3 is revolved by the crank-lever (Z5 the pinion D will turn the crank-arm d and said crank-arm will turn the drive-wheel b, and said drive-wheel being looked or keyed to the shaft B by the spring-operated lug b3 the shaft B will also be revolved.
The object of connecting the crank-lever d5 with the gear-wheel d3 in the manner described is simply to provide means for folding said crank-lever d5, so that the handle d will project in the opposite direction in order that this device may be packed in a small space when necessary, and instead of employing said crank-lever d5 any other suitable means may be provided for operating the gear-wheel d3, and the object of revolubly mounting the drive-wheel b on the powershaft B is to provide means whereby in the operation of winding the bobbin, as hereinafter described, the power-shaft will not be operated.
Mounted on the power-shaft B within the upper portion of the standard a2 is acollar C, a side view of which is given in Fig. 16, and mounted on said shaft adjacent to said collar is a triangular block C2, and both the collar C and the triangular block C2 are keyed to or formed on the shaft B, and thev corners of the block C2 project to the perimeter of the collar C, and the triangular block C2 may be formed on and constitute a hub for the collar C, if desired, and mounted on said shaft adjacent to the triangular' block C2 and a short distance therefrom is another collar O3, which is shown in detail in Fig. 15, and the collar C8 is also keyed to the shaft B, and secured to or formed on the perimeter thereof at equal distances apart are three buttons or knobs C4, these features of construction being best shown in Figs. 1, 2, 12, 15, and 16.

trally through said wall and said shoulders or projections is a screw ES, provided with a head E, and mounted on the screw E8 is a screw-threaded collar F, and the inner end of the screw E8 is provided with a collar F2, and the screw-threaded extension E5 of the bolt EB passes into the end of the screw E8, as clearly shown in Fig. 9.
The hub E2 of the lever E is provided with a central bore, the ends of which are enlarged at the upper and lower sides, as clearly shown in Fig. 18, and said lever is therefore free to oscillate transversely of the standard a2, and the upper end thereof is curved in form and bears upon the triangular collar or block C2, which is mounted on the shaft B and by which said lever E is operated, and the lower end of the lever E is pivotally connected with a link or bar G, Fig. 12, which is pivotally eonnected with a crank g, which is secured to or formed on a shaft g2, which is pivoted at g3 to hangers of the base-plate and extends longitudinally of the base-plate A of the frame and within one of the side flanges a below said base-plate.
Secured to or formed on the shaft g2 at predetermined distances from the ends thereof are two cranks or arms g4, between which is pivoted a shaft g5 by means of pivot-pins g, and the shaft g5 is provided wit-h arms g7 and g8, which project inwardly beneath the baseplate A of the frame, and the arm g8 at the rear end of the shaft g5 is provided at its inner end withy a knob or projection Q9, which is secured thereto and which projects at right angles therefrom in the direction opposite to that of the lever E, and the other arm g7, which is secured to or formed on the shaft g5, is rigidly connected at its free end with a downwardlydirected arm h of the fabricfeeder H, which is mounted in a transverse slot h2 in a plate h3, as shown in Fig. 13, the downwardly-directed arm h being formed on or secured to one end of said feeder H and said feeder being longitudinally movable in the slot or opening h2 in the usual manner.
Mounted centrally of the bottom of the base-plate A of the frame, Fig. 3, is a depending pin K, 011 which is mounted a sleeve 7f3, which is provided at one side with two similar segmental plates k2, which are best shown in Figs. 3 and 11 and between which is a camtrack 7c3, into which the knob or projection gJ on the arm g8 passes, Fig. 11, and the sleeve 7c is also provided with an arm 7a4, which pro- IOO IIO
jects therefrom at right angles tothe segmental plates 7a2 and in the direction opposite to that of the shafts g2 and g5.
The lower end of the lever E passes through a slot 105 in the base-plate A of the frame, as shown in Fig. 3, and secured to said baseplate adjacent to said slot and on the side thereof adjacent to the shaft g2 is a stop la, and l also provide a spring it, which is secured to the bottom of the base-plate A and the end of which bears upon the. lower end of the lever E opposite the bearing 7.55, and said spring is adapted to force the lower end of the lever E in the direction of the shaft g2.
The lever E is designed to operate the fabric-feeder H, and I also provide a lever L, which is intended to operate the shuttle-carrier, as hereinafter described. Said lever L is shown in detail in Fig. 19, also in Fig. l2,
and in Figs. l, 2, and9. This lever is provided centrally with a transverse hub L2, which is best shown in Figs. 9 and l2, and passing through said hub is a bolt L5, which is screwed into and. through a hub L4, formed on the inner side of one side of the standard a2 and also through the side of the standard, as clearly shown in Fig. 9, and the body portion of the bolt L5, which passes through the hub L2, isrof the form shown in dotted lines in Fig. 9, and said hub is securely held thereon and free to turn thereon, and this lever is adapted to oscillate longitudinally of the arm a3.
The upper end of the lever is provided with a triangular head L5, in connection with which, the collar C3 on the Vshaft B operates, and the side of said head adjacent to said collar is concave transversely, as shown at'L6 in Fig. 2, and at the upper and lower sides thereof are notches or recesses L7 and L5, through which the buttons or knobs C4 on the collar C3 pass in the operation of the machine, as hereinafter described, and the said triangular head L5 is convex in vertical section on its outer side, and formed therein is an anguiar slot L9, the ends of which are both directed toward the drive-wheel b and the central portion in the opposite direction or toward the support ofthe needle, and the ends of said slot are separated by a triangular pro.` jection L10.
The lower end of the lever L passes through a slot. M yin the base-plate A at the lower end of the standard a2 and is provided7 as shown in Fig. l2, with an outwardly-directed pin on, on which is mounted an open sleeve or band m2, with which is pivotally connected a rod m5, said connection of the rod m3 being made by means of a collar m4, to which is secured a thin flexible tongue m5, andthe opposite end of the rod 'm5 is pivotally connected in the same manner with the arm 755 of the sleeve 7c, on which the segmental plates 702 are formed, as shown at'25 in Fig. 3, and pivotally connected in the same or in any preferred manner with the end of the arm 104 at 26 is a rod m5, which is pivotally connected at 27 with an arm m7, which is connected with or formed on a sleeve m5, which is mounted on a pin m9 and held in place by a nut or bur m10, said pin being secured to the baseplate A of the frame, and connected with the opposite end of the arm m5 in any desired manner is a shuttle-carrier N. These features of the construction are best shown in Figs. 3, l2, and 17, and the shuttle-carrier N moves in a segmental or circular track n beneath a longitudinal slot n2, formed in a plate as, secured to the base-plate A of the frame, this feature being substantially the same as usual, with the exception of the segmental track/1t, in which the shuttle-carrier N travels.
The shuttle n4 is mounted in the shuttlecarrier N in the usual manner and is of the usual form, and pivoted to the iiange a on the under side of the base-plate A and adjacent to the outer end of the track n is an arm H5, which is best shown in Fig. +L, and said arm projects inwardly along the segmental flange a5 on the convex side of the track fn., in which the shuttle-carrier moves, and said arm is provided at its inner end with a depending extension nl, on which isformed an inwardly and upwardly directed hook cts, and the pivoted end of the arm a5 is provided with an upwardlydirected projection ng,
which ts in a slot O2, formed in the under side of the sliding plate O and adjacent to one edge thereof. The sliding plate O is adapted to cover the slot n2 in the plate 'a3 in the usual manner, and said slot or opening n2 is intended for the insertion and removal of the shuttle, and in practice all that is necessary in order to remove the shuttle is to pull the plate O outwardly, as shown in Figs. 4 and 13, when the upwardly-directed projection n on the arm a5 will strike the inner end wall of the slot O2 and throw up the free end of the arm 91.5, and in this operation the hook ns at the end of said arm will throw the shuttle n4 out through the slot or opening n2.
Mounted on the end of the shaft B which projects into the head co5. at the end of the arm a3 is acircular block P, provided with a hub P2, which projects into a corresponding opening formed in the end of the arm a5, and formed in the outer side of the circular block P, which is keyed or otherwise secured to the shaft B and revolves therewith, is a slot P3,
lthe general form of which is triangular, as
shown in Fig. 8, the sides of the triangle being inwardly curved, as shown at P5, while the corners thereof are cut away, as shown at P5, the slot P5 being thus provided with three short sides and three long sides, the long sides being inwardly curved or bent.
Pivotally connected with one side of the circular head a4 is a lever P5, which extends across said head and across the block P and which is provided with an inwardly-directed lug P5, which moves in the slot P3 and the free end of which is provided with a curved rod P5, which is pivotally connected therewith at P9 and the upper end of which is IOO pivotally connected at R with an arm R2, which is secured to the vertically-movable needle-bar R5, which is mounted in the front plate R4, which is secured to the head a4.
The upper end of the needle-bar R3 is provided with a vertical slot R5, through which projects a lever R5, mounted in a vertical slot R5, formed in the upwardly-directed extension a5 of the head a4, and the lever R5 is pivoted on a pin R5, which is provided with a spring R9, one end of which is secured to the pin R8 and the other passed through the lever R5 at R10, and the object ot' this spring R9 is to throw the lever R6 upwardly, and the upper end of the slot R5 in the needle-bar R3 is curved, as shown in Fig. 7, so as to correspond with the form of the lever R5, the form of which is shown in full and dotted lines in Fig. l.
The front plate R4 is provided in front of the needle-bar R3 with a vertical slot S, through which the spring-operated lever R6 passes, and in practice the thread 28 is carried from the spool through a hook or similar device S2, which is secured to or formed on the side of the front plate R4, as shown in/Fig. l, and then passed around the tension device S3, and
then carried upwardly and passed through the end of the lever R6 and downwardly through a keeper S4, secured to the front plate R4, and then through another keeper S5, secured to the lower end of the needle-bar.
The tension device S4 is shown in Figs. l,
5, 6, and 7 and is of the following construc-y tion: Formed centrally of the back of the front plate Rs is a vertical slot S5, in which moves an arm S5, formed on a plate S8, secured to the vertically-movable pressure-foot bar S9,which is mounted in the front plate R4 in the usual manner, and passing through said front plate R4 in line with the slot S6 is a screw-threaded bolt T, in the inner end of which is mounted a sliding pin T5, and mounted on the bolt T adjacent to the front plate R4 is a disk T5, the perimeter of which is beveled on its outer edge, and adjacent thereto is a similar disk T4, the perimeter of which is beveled on its inner edge, and the disks T3 and T4 are free to slide on the bolt S, and adjacent to the disk T4 is mounted a washer T5, and the outer end of the bolt T is provided with an adjustable screw-threaded nut T5, and between the nut T6 and the washer T5 is a spiral spring T7.
The construction of the bolt T and the washer T5 is shown in detail in Fig. 20, and the central opening in the washer T5 is provided with a transverse bar T8, which passes through the slot T9 in the bolt T, while the pin T2 moves in a longitudinal central bore T10, formed in the inner end of the bolt T and which communicates with the slot T9.
The arm S7 of the plate S5 is concave longitudinally on the inner side thereof, and as the pressure-foot bar S9 moves up and down the pin T5- will be forced outwardly or inwardly,
as the case may be, said pin being forced outwardly by the arm S7 and inwardly by the spring T7, and the thread is passed between the disks T3 and T4, and when the pressurefoot bar is raised preparatory to removing the fabric from beneath the pressure-foot u the pin T2 will be forced outwardly and with it the disk T4, and the tension on the thread will be released and the same may be easily pulled downwardly or loosened in the usual manner.
The back of the front plate R is cut away between the points u2 and n.5, so as to provide room or space for the lever P5, the rod P8, and the plate S8, and the arm R2, and mounted on the pressure-foot bar S9, above the plate S8, is a spiral spring u4,which is intended to hold the pressure-foot bar in its lowest position, and the tension of this springis regulated by a screw a5, which is mounted on the upper end of the pressure-foot bar and which enters the upper end of the front plate R4, and the upper end of the needle-bar is also provided with a central bore, into which passes a screw u5,which is adapted to limit the upward movement of the lever R5, and pivotally connected with the outer side of the front plate R4 and near the bottom thereof is a lever 11,5, which is adapted to operate in connection with a lug or projection us, .formed on or secured to the pressure-foot bar and passing through a slot ug in the front plate, the object of said lever being to raise the pressure-foot bar in the usual manner, said pressure-foot bar being held in the depressed position by the spring u4 and in the raised position by said lever U7.
The needle W is detachably connected with the needle-bar R3 in the usual or any preferred manner and passes through a slot formed in the pressure-foot u, and the operation thereof, in connection with the shuttle n4, is the same as in other machines of this class. Y
The opera-tion of this form of construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof: The shaft B may be revolved in any desired manner, either by a belt lnounted in the groove b5 in the hub of the drive-wheel b or it may be operated by 'the crank-lever d5, and at each revolution of the drive-shaft B the lever E will be given three successive oscillations by means of the triangular block C2 on said shaft, and the lower end of this lever being in connection, as hereinbefore described, with the fabricfeeder H by means of the parts G, g2, and g5 said fabric-feeder will also be given three complete reciprocations or three back-andforth movements. The slot 205 between the segmental plates b2, in which the knob orhead Q9 on the arm g5 moves, is upwardly inclined in the direction of said arm, and by means of this construction the arms g5 and g5 being rigidly secured to the shaft g5 the fabricfeeder H will move downwardly on its back- ICO IIC
ward movement and upwardly on its forward movement, thus operating to grip and release the fabric in the proper time. The shuttlecarrier and shuttle are operated at the same time by means of the lever L, and at each revolution of the shaft B the said lever is given three complete oscillations longitudinally of the arm of the machine, this result being accomplished by means of the buttons or knobs C4 on the collar C3, which operate in the slot L9 of the head L3 of said lever, and the lower end of this lever being connected, as herein described, with the arm m7, by which the shuttle-carrier is supported and operated, said shuttle will also be given three complete reciprocations or three back-and-forth movements in the race n. The movements of the shuttle and of the fabric-feeder H are thus made to correspond and the movement of the needle-bar and the needle is regulated in the same manner by means of the groove P3 in the circular head P, which is mounted on the end of the main shaft B, said result being accomplished by means of the lug or projection l?T on the lever P, which moves in the groove P3, said lever being in connection by means of the rod P8, which is pivotally connected therewith, and the arm R2 with the needle-bar, and by means of this construction at each revolution of the shaft B the needle-bar RS will be given three complete reciprocations or three up-and-down movements, and the operations of the shuttle, the needle, and the fabric-feeder are all thus made to correspond, and at each revolution lof the power-shaft three stitches will be made.
My improved machine is simple in construction and operation, and my invention is not limited to the means herein shown and described for connecting the lever L, the rod m3, the arm 7a4, the rod me, and the arm k7, any suitable pivotal connection being sufficient, and the same is also true of the means for connecting the lever E, the arm G, the shaft g-, the shaft g5, and the arms g7 with the fabric-feeder, as various devices may, as will be understood, be adopted for this purpose.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A sewing-machine provided withapowershaft, and means for revolving the same, a curved traok,a shuttle-carrier which is adapted to move in said track, an arm connected therewith, and pivotally supported, a lever pivotally mounted in the upright standard of the machine by which the main arm thereof, is supported, a collar mounted on the powershaft, and provided with a plurality of lugs or projections which are adapted to operate in an angular or irregular slot, formed in the head of said lever, and operative devices connected with the lower end of said lever, and with the arm of' the shuttle-carrier whereby the shuttlecarrier is given a plurality of movements for each revolution of the powershaft, substantially as shown and described.
2.- A sewing-machine provided with a powershaft and means for revolving the same, a curved track,a shuttle-carrier which is adapted to move in said track, an arm connected therewith, and pivotally supported, a lever pivot-ally mounted in the upright standard of the machine by which the main arm thereof is supported, a collar mounted on the powershaft, and provided with a plurality of lugs or projections whichV are adapted to operate in an angular or irregular slot formed in the head of said lever, and operative devices connected with the lower end of said lever, and with the arm of the shuttle-carrier, whereby the shuttle-carrier is given a plurality of movements for each revolution of the powershaft, and a fabric-feeder and needle-bar and devices connected with said fabric-feeder and needle-bar and with the power-shaft for correspondingly increasing the movements of said needle-bar and fabric-feeder, substantially as shown and described.
3. A sewing-machine provided with a powershaft and means for revolving the same, a collar mounted thereon, and provided with a plurality of sides, a transversely-oscillating lever pivotally supported in a hollow standard by which the arm of the machine is snpported, and the upper end of which operates in connection with said collar, and the lower end of which passes through the base-plate of the machine, a fabric-feeder connected with the lower end of said lever by means of an arm pivotally connected with said lever and with a longitudinal shaft mounted below the base-plate and provided with upwardlydirected arms between which is pivoted another shaft, said last-named shaft being provided with an arm which is connected with the fabric-feeder whereby said fabric-feeder is given a plurality of movements for each revolution of the power-shaft, and a needlebar and shuttle-carrier; and devices connected therewith, and with the power-shaft for IOO IIC
giving said needle-bar and shuttle-carrier a corresponding plurality of movements for each revolution of the power-shaft, substantially as shown and described.
4. A sewing-machine provided with a powershaft and means for revolving the same, a curved track, a shuttle-carrier which is adapted to move in said track, an arm connected therewith, and pivotally supported, a lever pivotally mounted in the upright standard of the machine by which the main arm thereof, is supported, a collar mounted on the power-shaft, and provided with a plurality of lugs or projections which are adapted to operate in an angular slot formed in the head of the lever, and operative devices connected with the lower end of said lever, and with the arm of the shuttle-carrier whereby the shuttlc-carrier is given a plurality of movements for each revolution of the power-shaft, and a fabric-feeder connected therewith, and with my invention I have signed my name, in presthe power-shaft, and With the operative mechence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th anism of the shuttle-carrier for giving 'said day of October, 1896. i
