TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: A

Be it known that I, DANIEL M. DONEHOO, of Beaver, Beaver county, State of Pennsylvania, lhave invented a-new and useful Improved Safety Bridle; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, suicient to enable one skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had vto the accompanying drawing, which is made part of this specification, and in which the bridle is shown imposition upon a horse:

The ring of the bit is suspended on eachside from a ring on the cheek-strap, by a running strap, which, connected primarily to the bit-ring, passes up and through the cheek-ring, is then carried down through'the bitring and connected to a safety rein; the latter is also connected to the gag rein so that pulling upon the safety vreinA shortens up the gag rein, and at the same time draws up the bit twards the ring on the cheek-strap.

In the drawings, the head-stall is composed of the cheek-straps A, brow-band B, land throat-latch C; to the ends of the cheek-straps are rings, D, from which the bit E is suspended by rings F in a manner to be descriloed..k

The strap G is attached to thebit-ring F, and passing thence is carried through the ring D and then downward through the bit-ring and is attached to the ring H, of the safety rein I, which is associated with the line J. To the ring H is likewise attached lthe 'bit-end of the gag or riding rein K, which passes through the bit-ring, up 'a'nd1through the gag-r nner L, `and thence to the hook on the gig-saddle. When the rein K is`used as a riding rein the gag-runner s dispensed with. It is my design, when it becomes necessary to use the safety rein-in driving, that the power exerted shall have the effect of pulling the bit up into the angle of the horses mouth and notipullgbackward on the teeth or jaw; at the same time'the slack of the gagrein is taken up, anyd', being shortened,` tends to'elevate the horses head and place him more under commaiid. Itwvill also be perceived that the strap G is carried up over the ring D and down again through the bit-ring F, after, which it connects with the ring pf the safetyvreiu. When the latteris pulled the effect is to give a greater power upon the bit owing to the duplication of the strap G between the rings F D; the bitI only rises at half the speed with which the safety reiuis pulled but with double the power, (except a trifling loss byfrictiomrot' course.) This power 'at' the expense of speed can Vbe increased by unfastening the end of thestrapA G from Athe bit-ringfand carrying it 'through the latter and upward to a connection with the cheekstrap A, so as to make it threefold. The deviceon the respective sides of-the animal is of course uniform. When the device is to be sed as ariding vbridle the driving line J is detached entirely at its point of connection with the bit-ring F, and the safety rein, (somewhat shortened,)

in connection with the rein K, becomes the 'means of-handling the horse. rlherein Kanswers for the ordinary travel and the safety rein for emergencies, as it did before. A martingale, (not shown may be appliedi'n connectionwith the device, either by connecting it tothe ring H of the safety rein, or so arranged that the ring of the martingale runs upon the line o r rein J. Any kindof bit can be used. It is a great advantage to a horse to have an easy bit to travel against,and I am able tofaiford it, as the means of safety against emergencies do not depend upon the severity ofthe bit but upon the direction and amount of power exertedupon the mouth of the animal.. v

Having described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The strap G, connecting the bit-ring F, and safety rein I, through the' cheek-strap ring D, in combination with the gag or riding r'ein- K, all arranged to operate substantiallyas and for the purpose specified.
