PHOTOGRAPHIC DEVELOPING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,143, dated November 29, 1898.

Beit known that I, WILLIAM B. CoZZENs, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Photographic Developing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
By means of this invention a photographic developing apparatus can be obtained which is serviceable in the daytime or in daylight and which can be made portable or of a size to be conveniently carried about, as set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the developing-box with its partition closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the partition open and the plate-holder and holder-support removed, the sensitive plate or film being in the box for developing. Fig. 4 is a section along fr, Fig. 1.
The developing apparatus comprises a box which can be opened o r to which access can be obtained in suitable manner. The front and rear sides of the box are shown at 1 and 1, and what may be called the right and left hand sides at 2 and 3. The bottom or lower side of the box is practically formed by a colored glass 4, and the top or upper side by the colored glasses 5 and 6, respectively located over the chambers 7 and 8, which can be separated by partition 9, also practically made of colored glass. Manifestly the color of the glass or parts 4, 5, 6, and 9 is such that the transmitted. light will not affect a sensitive plate or film in the box. ln other words, the expression colored can be construed asmeaningnon-actinic. Rubyglasshasbeen found serviceable for the desired purpose.
The transparent wall or side 4, located opposite the side or wall 5 6, allows the contents of the box or chambers to be observed while the boxis kept closed. Access can be gained to the interior of the box by a suitable door or opening part. A practical way has been found to consist in making the side or top sections 5 and 6 in the form of slides, which can be withdrawn. The partition 9 is also movable, so as to be capable of opening and clos- 5o ing communication between chambers 7 and 8. As shown, the partition 9 is a slide which can be raised and lowered and is steadied or held by guides or strips 10.
One of the chambers-as, for example, 7- has supports for a plate-holder. These supports are readily formed by strips or rails 11, laid or removably placed in chamber 7. lVhen the plate-holder has been dropped or laid on the supp'brts 1l, a suitable stop or shoulders 12 prevent such holder sliding or movinginto chamber 8.
The plate-holder is shown at 13 with shutters or oppositely-located slides 14 and 15 at front and back of the sensitive lm or plate 16. The plate-holder, as known, is slipped into the camera, (not shown,) and after exposure made by withdrawing slide 14 such slide is replaced. The holder, with ythe film or plate 16 inclosed between slides 14 and 15, is now placed on supports 11, the back of the plate or the slide 15 facing down, so that on the withdrawal of slide 15 the plate will drop onto back 4, face up. l
The slide 15 has an eye or attachment 17, suitable for the engagement of a hook or actuator 18, which can be slid or operated through a passage or opening 19 in side 3.
The lid 5 or chamber 7 being opened and holder 13 having been placed on support 11, the engaging device or hook 18 is engaged to slide 15 or eye 17. The chambers 7 and S or their covers 5 and 6 are then both closed. The partition 9 having been sufficiently raised or opened, the hook or opener 18 is pulled or moved to draw or carry slide 15 into chamber 8. The partition 9 is then closed to protect plate or film 16 in chamber 7. The chamberlid G is opened, and the slide 15 and preferably also hook 1S removed from the box, after which chamber 8 is again closed and partition 9 opened. The plate or film 16 hasby the withdrawal of slide 15 dropped out of holder 13 onto the back or bottom 4, the face of the plate or iilm being turned upward or toward the lids 5 and 6. By opening partition 9 and suitably tilting the box such plate or iilm will slide or move into chamber S, after which partition 9 is again closed. The chamber 7 being now opened, the holder 13 with slide 14 and supports 11 can be removed and developing fluid poured into chamber 7 and the latter again closed. On opening the par- IOO a fname tition 9, Fig. 3, and tilting the box the developing fluid can be made to run into chamber S or over the sensitive plate or film in the box, which box being transparent, as described, enables the course of the fluid to be noticed as the operator handles or tilts such box. rllie xing iiuid can also be run or guided over the film in the box, and the fluids as used can be successively poured off and the completed plate or film taken out of the apparatus.
The suitably-colored transparent walls or parts 4, 5, G, and 9 allow the developing and fixing to be carried on in the daytime in the open air, no dark room being required. Such box or apparatus being made of suitable portable shape or size can be conveniently carried about by tourists and others. The device can be used for developing and fixing films or plates as required and does away with the necessity of handling the solution, plates, or iilms until the developing and fixing are completed. Then the hook or slideengaging device 1S is withdrawn, the hole 19 could be suitably closed or plugged to exclude light. This hole 19 can, however, generally be made so small that no injurious entry of light can occur therethrough.
In case so-called roller-films are developed in the apparatus, such films extending from chamber to chamber, the partition 9 can be omitted.
As in practice it has been found objectionable to have the developer and fixing solution become mixed or come in contact with one another, the apparatus should be cleaned by having such fixing fluid removed or washed out. IVater has been found sufficient for cleaning, but water slightly acidulated with vinegar may be considered preferable and has been found not to injure the developer. One part by weight of vinegar to about fifteen to twenty parts by weight of water has been found to effect thorough cleaning or cutting, although, of course, this proportion may be somewhat varied. After having the fixer rcmoved or cleaned out the box or apparatus is ready for a fresh developing and iixin g operan tion.
The partition 9 is not necessarily made transparent; but in practice it has been found convenient to have a transparent partition.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure b y Letters Patent, is-- l. A developing apparatus comprising a box having a covered opening and transparent colored sides, a support for a plate-holder, and afhook or slide-engaging device for withdrawing the plate-holder slide, substantially as described.
2. Adevelopingapparatus comprisingabox provided with chambers having covered openings and having colored transparent walls, and a movable colored transparent partition arranged between the chambers, one of the chambers having a removable plate-holder support and the other chamber having a passage orperforation for tlieinsertion of a slideengaging` device or opener, substantially as described.
3. A developing apparatus comprising a box having a colored transparent bottom, a ver tically-inovable partition arranged to divide the box into two chambers, and colored transparent removable covers for said chambers, substantially as described.
4.. Adeveloping apparatus comprisingabox having a colored transparent bottom, a vertically-movable partition arranged to divide the box into two chambers, transparent, colored, removable covers for said chambers, a removable plate-holder support in one of said chambers, and means for withdrawing the slide from the plate -holder into the other chamber, substantially as described.
