ROLLER-SH ELF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,127, dated November 29, 1898.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. BAKER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roller-Shelves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a case and shelves constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal sec tion of the same, and Fig. 3 is a broken perspective detail showing a portion of the front of the case or frame and a shelf therein.

My invention relates to the cases containing rollers arranged toreceive books or heavy articles which are supported upon the roll ers so as to be easily inserted and withdrawn, and it is designed to provide a simple, cheap, and effective construction of these cases which can readily be made in duplicate from market shapes of metal.

In the drawings, 2 represents the case or frame, which consists of plates of metal secured together to form the back and sides. The front ends of the sides are curled or rolled to form curved columns 3 3, which will prevent injury to the edges of the book being inserted, the refiexed'portions being secured to the sides by rivets 4 and terminating in inwardly-projecting flanges 5 5. Vertical a11- gle-strips 6 are secured to the inner face of the sides near the back, and the strips 5 and 6 are provided with registering perforations, as shown.

The shelves are supported within the case by rearwardly-projecting pins 7 at the sides of each shelf, these pins entering the holes in the vertical strips when the shelf is pushed back within the case. at the desired elevation, and each shelf is then looked in place by swinging latches 8 8, secured to its side edges, these being swung down so as to engage the rear faces of the flanges 5.

Each shelf is built up in the following manner: The body consists of a single strip 9, which is bent into rectangular form, the forward end portions being bent into right-angled extensions 10, which project forwardly and support the front roller 11, which is shorter than the width of the shelf. To each side of the shelf is riveted a strip 12, which is bent outwardly at its front and rear to form lugs, which terminate in the pins 7, entering the holes in the vertical strips of the frame. Within the front portion of the shelf is secured the supplemental rectangular frame 13, which is composed of a single strip of metal bent to form a back and end portions, the front portions being bent back to form cross-strips 14, terminating in flanges 15, riveted to the back of the frame. A roller 16 is supported within the frame, this roller preferably being of the same length as the roller 11. Atransverse strip 17 is secured at the front of the shelf between the frame 13 and the front portions of the shelf-body by through-rivets 18.

The usual rollers 19 are employedin the body of the shelf, these preferably extending from one end to the other.

In assembling the parts the separate shelves are slid back within the case at the desired levels and locked in place by their latches, these separable shelves thus being adj ustable at any desired height.

The advantages of my invention result from the small number of parts used, the ease and cheapness of constructing, and the facility with which any shelf may be adjusted or replaced.

The sides of the case may be made of wood and the holes for the shelf-pins made therein or formed by eyes screwed to the sides. The columns may be made separately and fastened to the sides, and many other variations may be made in the shape of the case and the shelves without departing from my invention, since I claim 1. In roller-shelves, a containing-case having front and rear holes at the sides, a removable roller-shelf having at its ends lateral lugs provided with rearwardly-projecting pins arranged to enter the holes, and a latch device arranged to hold the shelf in place, substantially as described.

2. In roller-shelves,acontaining-casehaving registering front and rear holes, a roller-shelf having at its ends lateral lugs provided with rearwardly-projecting pins at its sides arranged to engage the holes, and latches arranged to lock the shelf in place; substantially as described.

3. In roller-shelves, a metallic ease having front and rear vertical strips provided with a series of holes, a roller-shelf having at its ends pins which project rearwardly parallel therewith and arranged to enter the holes, and a pivoted latch secured to the edge of the shelf and arranged to engage the rear face of one of the strips and lock the shelf in place; substantially as described.

In roller-shelves, a containing-case having its side plates formed into integral front columns and extended beyond the columns to form inwardly-projecting perforated flanges, said case having rear vertical perforated strips, of a removable roller-shelf having lateral lugs provided with rearwardly-projecting pins arranged to enter the holes in the flanges and strips,and a latch device arranged to hold the shelf in place; substantially as described.

6. A roller-shelf, consisting of a strip of metal bent to form a back and sides, the front ends being bent forwardly, a roller supported between these ends, a separate frame secured Within the front portion of the shelf and supporting a roller, said rollers being of less length than the shelf, rollers supported Within the shelf-body, and strips secured to the side edges of the shelf and having pins arranged to engage perforations in a case; substantially as described.
