SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,967, dated November 29, 1898. Application filed May 16, 1898. Serial No. 680,810. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crank Planers and Metal- Shapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to crank-planers and other similar metal-shaping machines having verticallyadjustable work tables; and the first part of my improvements comprises a peculiar combination of devices for supporting the front ends of such tables when unusually heavy pieces of work are secured upon them, these supporting devices being so constructed as to be readily shifted either up or down, as occasion requires; but this support can be conveniently rendered inoperative, as hereinafter more fully described.
The second part of my improvements consists in so slotting the front end of a crankplaner base as to enable very long pieces of work to be securely fastened to either side of the table, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a crank-planer embodying my improvements, the table-support being inoperative. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of said planer, but showing said supportin use. Fig. Sis a plan of the slotted machine-base. Fig. 4 is an enlarged axial section through the adj usting devices of the table-support.
The base A of the machine has a slot a in its front end, and mounted upon this base is a box-frame B, that carries the ram C'and devices for reciprocating it in the usual manner. Adapted for vertical adjustment on the front of this frame is a cross-head D, provided with a laterally-shiftable saddle E, a worktable F being either cast with or securely attached to said saddle. Arranged at the opposite ends of the slot at are abutments a a, that support an arch or bridge-piece G, having at its center a tubular guide H, whose upper end may be counterbored, as shown at h in Fig. 4. Resting upon the upper end of this guide is a nut I, the female thread of which engages with the male thread of a sleeve J, having a clamp-screw j tapped in it.
K is a cylindrical column or prop traversing the sleeve J and guide II and usually provided with a longitudinal groove k for the reception of the point of screw j. By this arrangement the turned surface of the column is not injured when said screw is set up very tightly, so as to prevent any possible shifting of the column K.
WVhen the machine is used for planing light work, there is no need of supporting the table F upon the column K, and the latter is accordingly left in the inoperative position seen in Fig. 1; but when a heavy piece of work is to be planed this column is raised until it just about contacts with the under side of the table, and then the screwj is set up very tightly, so as to prevent any possible slipping of said column within the sleeve J. After this act the nut I is so turned as to raise the sleeve and its now attached column and cause the latter to support the front end of the table in a very secure manner. It will thus be seen that a quick shifting of the column is effected by hand, and then a final and more accurate and powerful adjustment is made by simply turning the nut I.
By slotting the front end of the base, as at a, down Wardly-proj ecting portions of castings or forgings bolted to either side of the table may be inserted through said slot while other portions of the work are being planed.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in a crank-planer, or metal-shaper, of a vertically-adjustable table F, guide H, nut I, screw-threaded sleeve J, screwj, and column K, as herein described, and for the purpose stated.
2. The combination, in a crank-planer, or metal-shaper, of the base A, having a slot at in its front end, abutments a a, at the opposite ends of said slot, and a bridge-piece attached to said abutments, which bridge-piece carries vertically-adjusting devices that support the planer-table,in the manner described, and for the purpose stated.
