CHUCK. FOR PLANING VALVES.
snncIFIcATIoN fermingpert of Lettere Patent No. 284,227, dated september 4, 1883. f
\ V.dppiieetieii filed dimite, Issa (No model.) f
M To all zuhomt't may concern: o
Be itknown that I, DANIELW. PEDRICK, of 'the city and county of Philadelphia, in .the
l [convenient and effective meansfor adjusting f i other steamengines, orother objects of analogous` form, in proper position to be acted upon` and securing slide-valves of locomotive and by the tool of aportable planing-machine,
andthereby tofacilitate repairs to said engmes, particularly in roundhouses, or in locatlonswhere a fixed planing-machine is Ilot o readily accessible `or cannot `be used eco omically for thepu'rpose. i
To this end my improvements consist in certain novel devices and combinations, including i `a baselplate, a series of planeresupports `connected thereto, a'valve-clamp which is adjustable longitudinally `uponfthe base-plate, and mechanism4 for adjusting and supporting aplaner parallel to and-at required `distance from the base-plate; also, a base-plate having one or more guidesior ways fixed thereto, a
` pair of clampingjaws utted to move longitudinally on said guides, and anndjusting-scrcw adapted to rotate in bearings` on the base` i plate, and having right and leftlhand threads,
...which respectively engage the clamping-jaws.
i The improvements claimed 'are `hereinafter` a `more fully set forth. a
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 4lois a View in perspective ofia chuck for planing `valves embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a plan or ,top` Aviewvof the same; and Figs. 3 and 4, longitudinaland transverse sections, respectively, through the same, 'taken at the :lines m x andy y, respectively, of Fig. 2.
In the` practice of my inventionI form,
. arpreferably of cast-iron, stout bed enbase plate, A, havingasupport for aportable plan- `ing-machine, as presently to be described, lo-
' cated at or adjacent to each of its corners.
A pair of dovetailed or inclined sidedguides or wa s A are cast u on and extend cenltrallyland longitudinally across the base-plate. ,A clamping-screw, B, having a right-ha`nd i d thread, b, and a left-hand thread, I/,each ex- '-basep1ate y Iscrtmgin one or the other direction, such rotending from its middle portion the base-plate atthe ends of said guides, and
Y a pair of clamping-jaws, C C, having nuts on their under sides, which engage, respectively,
a a to a journal, formed at or near one of its ends, is fitted to rotate between the guides A" in. bearings a on the threads b and b', and are mounted and adapt ed to slide freely upon the guides A', so as to be movable toward -and from the centerof .the the rotation of theclamping `tationloeing effected by the application of a crank or socket wrench 'to one of the squared ends of the screw.V Y o d In the instancefshown, each of the supports for the planeriscomposed of a stud, D, se
cured in and projecting vertically from the base-plate at or near one of its corners, and '7 a sleeve or tubular standard', D', which fits around thestud D and rests upon the base-A plate, said sleeve `having an external thread at and adjacent to its upper end, and an index por series of graduations, d marked upon" its I exterior below said thread. A supporting nutD2, engages the thread of the sleeve D, the upper surface of said nut being faced olf truly to afford a proper bearing, and having a central opening, through which thestud `D passes freely. Thev frame of the" planer is clamped between the supporting-nuts D2 and washers d2, which are tightened against its up! per facebyclamping-nuts Dengaging threads d i. `f
on the studs D, and to provide alfirmer and more accurate bearing the washers d2 are dished or made concave att'op, and the nuts D5 similarly convex at bottom.
' In operation, `the valve E, Vwhich is to'be planed, is placed between the jaws C `C of the clamp, and by the rotation of the screw B said jaws faremoved against and firmly hold the` valve'in the central position proper to receive the action ofthe planing-tool. Bymeans ofthe supporting-nuts the frame of the planer is adjusted and held in position, at any desired distance from the .basel plate` within a given range, and the graduations upon the sleeves D enable the planer-frame to be set accu# rately parallel with "the base-plate. Y
It will be 'obvious thatin lieu of using a studl and a separate sleeve, asdescribed and shown, said members may, if preferred, be
IOO
formed in a single pieicce-that is to say, a rod or bolt of sufficient diameter to receive the nut D2, ttedat one end tot-he basc-plate, and
having a thread of smaller diameter to receive the clamping-nut D3. n
vThe planer, which may be of any approved construction, does not constitute part of my present invention, and need not therefore be herein described. As an example of a structure suitable for the purpose7 reference may be had f tothe patent of J. T. Kichner and WV. H.
Odcnatt, No. 143,080, datedSeptember 23,
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a base-plate, a series of vertical .planer-supports' connected thereto, guides or ways located upon the base-plate in a plane at right .angles to' said4 supports, and a valveclamp fitting said guides, and movableand adjustablethereon.
2. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a base-plate, a series of planer-sup ports, each having an external thread engaging a supporting-nut, and an index or series of graduations below said thread, anda series of clamping-nuts engaging threads on the supports above the threads of the supp orting-nuts. 3. The combination of a base-plate, a series of vertical planer-supports connected thereto,
guides or ways located upon the'base-plate in a plane at right angles to said supports, lapair of valve-clamping jaws fitted to move longitudinally on said guides, and a clampingscrew mounted in bearings on the base-plate, and having two threads of opposite lead, respectively, each of which engages a corresponding nut upon -one oil the clamping-jawafsubstantially as set forth.
