To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMEs O. FERNALD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in the trolley-pole at its point of contact withthe overhead wire, whereby its liability to leave the wire or break it at curves bylateral friction therewith is effectually prevented; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to trolley-poles; and it consists of certain improvements hereinafter set forth. Its objects are to prevent the wear and breakage of the wire and the liability to leave or jump the wire at curves. These objects I attain by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in
which Figures 1, 2, and 3 are the same side view of the device, showing its relative position to the pole at various angles formed by a running car. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the device fitted together. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same attached to the pole. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the frame with its movable side plate removed. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the side plate. Fig. 8 is a reversed view of the same. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of an axle upon which the frame has a semirotary action to the right or left laterally.

The plate A and the body of the frame ct are made in one piece. The movable plate A is fitted thereto and retained in position by means of projecting lugs a fitting in channels a for their reception in the body of the frame a.
Between the plates A A the wheels E E are clamped and secured in position by means of the bolts 6, thus providing for the replacement of Worn-out wheels.
The shaft B is made with a hinge O at the point of connection to the pole D and at the top with a wedge-shaped shoulder 1), upon and from which projects the axle I), extending through a vertical hole in the body of the frame a, and riveted sufficiently high above the frame to allow the device to rise on the wedge-shaped shoulder b by a rotary motion laterally.
The operation is as follows: It is evident that the device, acting upon the hinge 0, ad- 3' usts itself to the motion of the pole D. Then by the use of two wheels and the V-shaped channel a, closely fitted over the wedgeshaped shoulder Z), a perfect line with the wire is assured and maintained upon rounding a curve by its action upon the axis 1), thus preventing the wheels at anytime to be at an angle with the wire and obviating the friction caused thereby.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a trolley, the combination of the trolley-pole, a loosely-jointed section connected to the pole on a transverse axis or hinge, a frame pivoted upon the upper end of the jointed section upon a vertical axis, two grooved contact-wheels journaled one upon each end of said frame, and means independent of the pole consisting of a V-shaped shoul- I der and socket carried by the jointed section and frame for normally causing the wheels of said frame to lie in the plane of the pole and jointed section.
2. In a trolley, the combination of the pole D, with the jointed section B hinged thereto on a transverse axis 0 and also having a vertical pin 1), a frame A, A loosely journaled upon the vertical pin and movable about and longitudinally upon it, a grooved roller at each end of the frame, and an interposed V- shaped shoulder b and socket a between the A frame and jointed section and independent of the pole D whereby the action of the trolley on the suspended conductor always presses the socket and shoulder into contact irrespective of the obliquity of the pole.
3. In a trolley, the combination of the frame A having the central block a formed with a vertical bearing, a grooved contact-wheel arranged on each end of the frame A, a second frame A fitting to and detachably clamped to the central block, and bolts 6 connecting the frames A, A at their ends and constituting the bearings for the Wheels and clamping the frame A to the central block.
4. In a trolley, the combination of the frame A having the central block a formed with a vertical bearing and also with the V-shaped socket a, a grooved contact-wheel arranged. on each end of the frame A, a second frame A fitting to the central block, bolts e connect- IO ing the frames A, A at their ends and constituting the bearings for the Wheels, a trolleypole D, and a jointed section B hinged at c to the pole and having a "vertical pin b adapted to the bearing in the block (1 of the frame A and a V-shaped shoulder 19 adapted to the 5' socket in the said block.
