SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,871, dated November 29, 1898. Application filed April6,1398. Serial ITO-676,627. (No model.)

Be it known that I, GEORGE KLEIN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanisms for Operating Alarm-Bells on Cars, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as Will enable those skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a device for sounding an alarm-bell suitably located upon a car 5 and the object thereof is to provide a simple, eifective, and reliable means especially adapt ed for the use of cable or other street cars, whereby an alarm-bell may be sounded by the motorman or driver.

The invention consists of a mechanism for sounding an alarm-bell constructed substantially as described, and defined in the claims.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the forward portion of a motor-car provided with my improved mechanism for sounding the alarmbell, and Fig. '2 is a bottom view thereof.

In the drawings, A represents a car of any ordinary or preferred construction.

a is a foot-lever pivoted in a slot in the front platform of the car within convenient reach of the motorman. The lower end of the lever a projects downwardly a suitable distance beneath the bottom of the car and is provided with a slot a at its lower end. Loosely piv-- oted in this slot is a bar a, which is preferably divided and screw-threaded at its adjacent ends and connected by an ordinary turnbuckle a whereby proper adjustment of the same can be effected. The inner end of the rod on is sleeved in the lower extremity of a suitable hanger a which is secured to the bottom of the car. The inner end of the rod a is adapted to support a bell a which may be of any ordinary or preferred construction.

Fixed to the axle of the car or connected therewith in any desired manner are two radial arms or rods provided with strikers B at the ends thereof, which may be of any deend of which is secured in any suitable mannor to the forward part of the car.

From the above description it will be seen that by pressing the foot upon the foot-lever a the rod a will be caused to move backwardly,

, carrying the bell a into the path of the revolving striking-lugs B. So long as the bell is held in this rearward position it is obvious that it will continue to sound so long as the car is in motion or until the pressure is removed from the foot-lever a .when the spring a Will restore the bell to its normal or re tracted position.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a car, of an alarm mechanism, comprising a slot formed in the platform of the car, a lever pivoted therein and projecting downwardly therethrough, a rod pivotally connected with said lever and extending backwardly through a suitable support connected with the bottom of the car and in which said rod is longitudinally movable, a bell or gong connected with the rear end of said rod, and strikers connected with the axle of the car, adjacent to said rear end of said rod and adapted to operate in connection with said bell or gong, said rod being composed of separate adjustable sections,substantially as shown and described.
