UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN BUYTEN, OF DUSSELDORF, GERMANY.
SAN D-BLAST APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,833, dated November 29, 1898.
Application filed November 2,1897. Serial No. 657 157. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN BUYTEN, a citizen of the German Empire, residing atDus seldorf, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Method of and Apparatus for Bringing out Plastically the Veining on Wood, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means for bringing out in a plastic manner the grain on the surface of wood, so as to impart to the latter a peculiar antique appearance. The wood is exposed to the action of a sand -blast and is moved longitudinally and transversely over the same, so that the blast is directed evenly over the entire surface of the wood, or, if desired, the wood may remain stationary while motion is imparted to the nozzle of the sand-blast apparatus. The blast will remove the softer particles of the wood, while the harder grain will come to the surface. The sand-blast may be operated by steam, air, or other power, or the sand may be forcibly thrown against the wood by wings or other mechanical devices.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a plan thereof with some of the parts omitted; Fig. 3, a vertical cross-section on line A B, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4., a side elevation of part of the apparatus. Figs. 5 and 6 are transverse sections of the apparatus, showing the dog 13 tilted in opposite directions.
The letter A represents the ejector of the sand-blast apparatus, which throwsthe jet of sand out of nozzle 0 and against the wood to be grained. This Wood is fed automatically backward and forward and also sidewise over the blast by means of an endless chain Z0, which passes over a pair of pulleys 7c and receives motion from shaft W.
e and d are a pair of frames, of which the frame 0 receives reciprocating longitudinal motion and the frame cZ receives transverse motion from chain lo. 'Olamps e, engaging the frames and adjustable thereon, permit boards B of different sizes to be attached thereto. heads 0, engaging with their ends the groove of a fixed railn and serving to guide the frame in a rectilinear direction.
Motion is transmitted from the chain 74; to the frame a as follows: To the frame c is pivoted a laterally-oscillating lever 19, carrying a dog p, which has two serrated edges adapted to alternately engage the links of chain is. The front and rear edges of the dog are inclined and adapted to contact alternately with oppositely-inclined stops g, affixed to the ends of the race. As the dog contacts with these stops it is alternately swung sidewise in opposite directions, so as to engage opposite sides of the chain and to thus impart reciprocating longitudinal motion to frame a. In order to hold the dog in either of its inclined positions, it is provided with anose fi, engaged by a tripspringf, Fig. 3.
The oscillation of dog 19 also effects the lateral movement of frame cZ as follows: From the dog p projects upwardly an arm 71., that rotates a longitudinal shaft Z by means of links 1' Z. To shaft Z is connected an arm m, having a pawl m, which engages a toothed bar 2 of frame cZ. As the dog 19 is rocked it will rock the shaft Z to move the frame cZ across the blast for the distance of one or more teeth.
What I claim is- In an apparatus for bringing out the grain on wood, the combination of a sand-blower with a longitudinally-movable frame, a tilting serrated dog mounted thereon, means for tilting the dog at the ends of the race, a chain engaging the dog, a laterally-movable frame having a rack, and a pawl operated by the dog and engaging the rack, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMANN BUYTEN.
Witnesses WILLIAM ESSENWEIN, WALTHER FRIEDRICH.
