Description
v Patented Nov 22, I898 J. H.JACKSON. DENTAL TOOL (Application filed Jan. 18, 189$.)
- 72% @L M e No. 6l4,723.
\x rmas'as si 5 i JOHN II. JACKSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO \VYMAN II. STREETER, OF SAME PLACE.
DENTAL TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,723, dated November 22, 1898.
Application filed January 18, 1898. Serial No. 667,062. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. J ACKSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Tools, of
which the following is-a specification.
This invention relates to dental tools; and it has for its obj set to provide improved means for dental polishing and like operations. The
invention consists in the improvements which I shallnow proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a dental tool constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section through the fore part of the tool.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in both the figures.
Referring to the drawings, a designates a handle, the rear part of which is formed as a sleeve, with provisions adapting the tool to be coupled to the dental engine. To the forward part of the handle a is affixed a base I), 2 5 and to said base are affixed two flexible standards c 0, preferably composed of tempered steel and carrying at their outer ends small flanged rolls or pulleys cl (1.
e is a driving-roll having a peripheral por- 0 tion 6, which may consist of soft rubber or other tractive material. The roll 6 has a spindle e journaled in the handle a and extending through the center thereof, said spindle being formed at its rear end with a suit- 3 5 able coupling portion 6 adapting it to be coupled to the end of the shaft of the dental engine, the roll 6 being thus rotated when said shaft is rotated. I
f is an endless band passingaround the rolls 40 d d 0, so as to be supported thereby and driven when the roll is rotated. The band f is composed of suitable flexible material, such as cloth, and is provided with an abrasive inner surface. Said band may be prepared in a similar manner to the ordinary polishing-strips heretofore used in dentistrythat is, by causing finely-divided emery or like substance to adhere to the surface of the cloth-or it may be prepared in any other suitable or desired manner.
It will be seen that the contact between the abrasive inner surface of the band f and the soft peripheral surface of the roll e gives said roll considerable driving power on the band.
To use the tool in the operation of polishing a finished filling in a tooth, for instance, one of the three stretches of the band, pref erably the stretch between the rolls d d, is placed against the tooth in a manner to bring the abrasive inner surface of the band in contact with the filling. The rotation of the engine-shaft transmitted to the roll e will cause the band f to travel rapidly and exert an abrading or polishing action on the filling.
By reason of the flexibility of the standards 0 c the rolls d d can be moved from their normal positions toward each other and toward the roll 6, so as to cause a slack in the bandf, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This enables the band to be curved around a tooth g, so as to conform in some degree to the contour of said tooth. This action is produced by moving the tool laterally away from the tooth and creating a tension upon the band. The dentist is thus enabled to polish a large portion or the whole of the surface of a filling at once.
I do not limit myself to the exact construc tion herein set forth, as the same may be varied considerably without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim- 1. A dental tool comprising an endless abrasive band, a plurality of rolls for supporting and driving the same, and a handle for lifting and manipulating the tool.
2. A dental tool comprising an endless abrasive band, a plurality of rolls for supporting and driving the same, and yielding supports for one or more of said rolls normally holding the band tight and adapted to yield to cause a slack in the band.
3. A dental tool comprising a base, a han= dle connected therewith for lifting and manipulating the tool, an endless abrasive band, means on the base for supporting said band,
and a driving-r011 in contact with the band said band, and yielding supports for said idleand having a, shaft extending through the rolls. :0 handle and formed to be connected with a In testimony whereof Ihave affixed mysigdental engine. nature in presence of two witnesses.
