GAME DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,484, dated November 22, 1898.

Application filed June 24, 1898. Serial No. 684,368. (No model.)

T0' @ZZ whom it may concern: l Be it known that I, ERNEsT FREDERIC BARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefwul Improvements in Game Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to game devices; and it comprises a new game which is called the game of patriots and is played by a pack of cards which is divided into three sets, the first two sets being equal in number and one of said sets being provided with the names of the presidents and the other with the names of the corresponding vice-presidents, and the cards of said first two sets being also provided with a number representing the year when the corresponding presidential term began, andthe cards of the third set being greater in number than either of the other two sets and being provided with numerals, as hereinafter described. f

My improved game-cards consist, preferably, of a pack of eighty-two cards, and, as herein described, thirteen of these cards are provided with the names of the presidents in consecutive order, beginning with the first president,` and thirteen of said cards are provided with the names of the corresponding vice-presidents. Sixteen of said cards are also provided with the numeral l, three of said cards with the numeral 2, two of said cards with the numeral 3, three with the numeral 4, three with the numeral 5, two with the numeral 6, six with the numeral 7, fifteen with the numeral S, four with the numeral 9, and two with the character 0.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciiication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l represents two of the cards of my improved pack provided on their faces one with the name of the iirst president and the numeral indicating the year when his term began and the other with the name of the vice-president for said term and the number indicating the beginning of the term; Figs. 2 and 3, face views of the numeral-card which I employ, and Fig. 4 a view showing the position which the cards assume at the end of the game.

In the practice of my invention the names of the president and vice-president are preferably placed upon the cards, at each end thereof, so as to read from either end, andl the corresponding numeral indicating the beginning of the term is also placed on the cards in a similar manner.

The' numeral-cards may have the numbers placed on both ends thereof, so as to read from either end, and the backs of the cards may be provided with any preferred design, picture, or character.

I prefer to place on the backs of the presidential and vice-presidential cards the pictures of the presidents and vice-presidents, respectively, and on the backs of the numeralcards I prefer to place pictures of the ships of the American navy; but, as hereinbefore stated, the pictures or representations onA the backs of the cards forni no part of my invention and may be modified as desired.

The game is played by any desired number of players from one to six, inclusive, and after the cards are thoroughly shued the dealer counts out sixvcards, and the sixth goes to the first player on his left. I-Ie then counts siX more, the sixth going to the second player, and so on until every player has one card, which he places in front of himself, face up, on the table. The dealer then puts the cards together and places the pack in the center of the table, face up. Each player who has not drawn either a president or vice-president must deposit in the center of the table a chip, and the first player then takes the top card.

If he has a president and draws any number, he need not deposit any chip, or if he has a vice-president and the card he draws is a numeral-card he need not deposit a chip. 'If his first card is a numeral-card, however, and he draws another numeral, he must deposit a chip, and if he has any numeral-card and draws a president or vice-president he need not deposit a chip.' This rule applies to every player. The second player after the first has drawn draws the top card in the same manner, and then the third and fourth, and so on around the table until all the players have drawn, and this is continued until each IOO 2 Suasa' player has six cards before him. XVhen the players draw their seventh card,they must discard one, (any one will do,) face down, in the center of the table, and a player must never have more than six cards before him, just enough to form what I call a campaign, as shown in Fig. 1. Vhen the original pack is gone, the dealer turns over the discarded cards and the players draw, as before, until one of them has completed his campaign, as shown in Fig. 4f, which ends the game, and the irst to accomplish this takes all the chips that have been deposited.

It will be observed that the player winning the game has his cards in the position shown in Fig. 4--the president on the left, the vicepresident on the right, and the year that their terms began indicated by the nu meral-cards, which are placed between the president and vice-president.

My improved game is very interesting and is also instructive, the act of playing the same serving to fix in tne minds of the players the names of the president-s, the date when their terms began, and the name of the corresponding vice-presidents.

My improved pack of game-cards need not be limited to the number herein described, as additional presidential and vice-presidential cards may be employed, as will be readily understood.

Having fully described my invention, 1' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A pack of playing-cards divided into three sets, the first two sets being equal in number and one of said sets being provided with the names of the presidents and the other with the names ofy the corresponding vicepresidents, and said cards of said sets being also provided with a number representing the year when the corresponding term began, and the cards of the third set being each provided with one of the numerals from l to 9 or the character O, substantially as shown and described.

2. A pack of playing-cards divided into three sets two of which are equal in number and provided with the names of the presidents and vicepresidents, and the cards of the third set being` each provided with one of the numerals from l to 9p or the character O, substantially as shown and described.
