To all whom it Huey-concurra' Be it known that I, NEWTON K. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Lawrence, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mine-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mine-gates of the class shown and described in my application for Letters Patent of the.
United States, filed November 20, 1897, Serial No. 659,311, in which a folding gate-curtain operated to open and close the mine-passage by coacting depressible platforms is provided.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel form of gate and simple and effective operating mechanism therefor adapted to be actuated to open the gate by the wheels of a car running along the track-rails.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be herein-V after more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a mine-gate embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of same. Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of portion of the gate and coperating parts. Fig. l is a detail perspective view of portion of the gate and one of the posts, showing the arrangement of the cord and pulley. Fig. 5 is a similar view, a portion of the post being broken away to show the guide-groove. Fig. 6 is a detail cross-sectional view showing the gate-curtain folded.

The construction of parts thus far described is substantially the same as that shown and claimed in my allowed application hereinbefore mentioned and, broadly considered-,forms no part of my present invention.
The specific improvements to which this invention relates will now be described.

The cords 7L h being secured to the levers will move in accordance therewith and raise the lower end of the curtain, causing it to fold in the manner shown in Fig. 6 and open the gateway. The gatecurtain will remain open until the car passes over the depressible bars,whereupon the gate will be caused to unfold and close the gateway by the weight of the bar E, and at the same time the depressible bars and coacting parts will be restored to their normal positions through the combined action of bar E and the counterweights o3, as will be readily understood.
I desire it understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-n l. In a mine-gate, the combination with the v track-rails, of rock-shafts mounted on the ties thereof, depressible bars extending parallel with the rails and connected with said shafts, a folding gate-curtain, operating-levers pivoted to one of the ties and provided at their lower ends with crank-arm s, connections between the depressible bars and crank-arms of the levers, and operating-cords connecting the curtain with the upper ends of the levers,- substantially as described.
2. In a min agate, the combination with the track-rails, of gate-posts provided on their inner faces with grooves and carrying pulleys at their upper ends, a folding gate-curtain made fast at its upperend and provided at its lower end with a gravity-bar arranged to traverse said grooves, a series of transverse battens on the curtain provided at their outer ends with eyes, cords connected with the projecting ends of the gravity-bar and extending through the eyes of the battens and around said pulleys, rock-shafts mounted in bearings on the projecting ends of the railties, depressible bars extending parallel with the rails and secured to said shafts, each of said bars being provided with a laterallyproject-ing connecting-arm, operating-levers provided at their lower ends with crank-arms and pivoted adjacent thereto to the ends of one of the rail-ties and connected at their upper ends to the said operating-cords, and links connecting the crank-arms of the levers with the said laterally-projecting arms of the depressible bars, substantially as described.`
3. In a mine-gate, the co1nbination,With the track-rails, of a depressible bar, extending parallel with said rails, a folding gate-curtain provided with a series of transverse battens and a weighted bar at the lower end thereof, levers operatively connected with said depressible bars, and cords connecting the weighted bar on the lower end of the curs tain with said levers, whereby the downward NHVTON K.
