Beit known that I, JoHN B. BENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wymore, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Wire-Reel, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in Wire-reels.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of wire-reels and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one adapted to be readily mounted on a wagon and capable as the latter is driven over the ground to wind up wire automatically and arrange the same uniformly on a spool. l
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a simple and efficient guide for directing Wire toa spool, adapted to control the wire and at the same time permit kinks and bends to pass through it without catching and clogging the machine.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

1 designates a su pporting-frame detachably secured to a wagon 2, and consisting of a vertical bar 3 and a horizontal bar 4,v crossing each other and connected at the outer end of the hub of the Wheel 5. The frame is principally supported by the wheel 5, and it is braced against the upper edges of the Wagonbody by inclined bars or braces 6, pivoted at their outer ends to the vertical bar 3 at opposite sides thereof and provided at their inner ends with notches 7, which receive the upper edges of the body. The braces 6, which diverge slightly, are pivoted in opposite recesses of the bar 3 of the frame, and the latter is securedto the wagon by means of a tie-rod 8, provided at its outer end with a hookv and having its inner end threaded and extended through the bar 3 and provided with a nut 9. TheV hook 10 of the rod is designed to engage the upper edge of one of the standards, and when the rod extends entirely across the Wagon-body, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, along rodis employed, and a short rod is used when the frame is connected with the adjacent standard.
The frame is connected with the wheel 5 by an inner toothed band 11 and an outer band 12, which is provided with outwardlyextending arms 13 and 14, secured, respectively, to blocks 15 and a fender 16 of the frame l. The blocks 15 are arranged at the lower end of the vertical bar 3 and the ends of the horizontal bar 4, the block at one end of the latter being preferably formed by an extension of a vertical bar or standard 18. The fender 16, which is secured to the inner face of the upper portion of the bar 3, has a convex upper face and is located above the gearing to prevent dirt from falling into and clogging the same.
The inner band is provided at its inner and outer edges With anges 19 and 2O and forms a bearing for the outer' band, which is arranged in the space between the said flanges. The bolts 21 for securing the inner band to the wheel are located at points between the spokes, and the flanges of the inner band eX- tend from the inner and outer faces of the same, the inner portions of the flanges being provided with perforations to receive the said bolts. The inner threaded ends of the bolts are arranged in slots 2.2 of plates 23, which engage the spokes and extend across the spaces between the same. The nuts 24 bear against the plates 23, and by slightly loosening the same the said plates may be turned out of engagement with the spokes, thereby permitting the device to be removed from the Wheel without entirely detaching the nuts.
The outer flange is provided with teeth 26, which mesh with a pinion 27, adapted to IOO connect the inner band or gear-wheel with a pinion of a spool-shaft 29. The pinion 27 is provided with a hub extension or sleeve and is slidingly mounted on a stub-shaft 32, whereby it is shifted into and out of mesh with the toothed flange of the inner band and the pinion of the spool-shaft to throw the machine into and out of operation. The hub extension or sleeve is provided with an an'- nular groove and is connected with an arm 30 of a shifting-rod 3l. The shiftingrod is angularly bent between its ends to offset its outerportion from the plane of the pinion, and the transverse connecting portion is mounted in a guide 33.
The spool-shaft 29 is tubular, being constructed of gas-pipe or other suitable material, and within the tubular shaft 29 is arranged a bearing-tube 34, which is interposed between the spool-shaft and a rod 35, whereby friction is reduced to a minimum. The gearing is arranged between the arm 14 and the upper portion of the vertical bar 3, and the spool-shaft, which extends through the frame, is adapted to receive an ordinary spool 37, upon which the wire is reeled, and after one spool is filled it may be readily removed from the spool-shaft and another spool placed thereon.
The spool is secured to the spool-sliaft by a tension device 28,detachabl y connected with the spool and consisting of a pair of bars or members provided at their inner faces with opposite recesses 39 to receive the shaft and connected at their ends by bolts 40, having nuts adapted to be adjusted to regulate the clamping action. As the wire collects on a spool each rotation of the latter winds an increased amount of wire, and in order to compensate for this inequality and relieve the parts of strain the tension device is provided. The tension device permits the spool to slip on the shaft to prevent the wire from being broken or the device from being injured.
The rod upon which the .inner tube 34 is mounted is provided at its inner end with a head and has its outer end threaded. The head is arranged against the arm 14C of the outer band, and a nut il screws on the threaded outer end of the rod.
The spool-shaft is provided at its inner end, in the space between the frame and the arm 14,with a worm 42, which meshes with a pinion 43 of a shaft 44, journaled in bearings 4:5 of the frame l and in a bearing-opening of the standard 18. The front end of the shaft 4:4 is provided with a crank 4G and is connected by a rod or bar 47 with an oscillating guide 4S, adapted to distribute wire evenly on the spool. The guide is provided at its top with a shank or bar 49, pivoted to an upper arm 50 of a bracket 5l and provided with a series of perforations 52, which permit the connecting-bar to be adjusted to vary the stroke. The bracket 5l is provided with a lower extended arm, which forms a support for the guide 4S.
The shank or bar 4:9 of the guide 4S has its lower end fitting in a socket 53 of the guide, and the latter consists of upper and lower inclined plates 54 and 55 and vertical sides or posts 5G and 57, rounded at their inner faces and located out of alinement, one of the posts being preferably four inches in advance of the other. The transverse separation of the posts or sides is about one inch, and by this construction perfect control of the wire is had, and in event of a kink or bend striking the front side or post it will clear the same before reaching the rear side or post, thereby preventing the machine from becoming clogged or injured by the kinks and bends of wire.
The wheel rotates the spool-shaft and motion is reduced and communicated therefrom to the oscillating guide, which travels slowly back and forth in front of the spool, distributing the wire uniformly on the same.
The invention has the following advantages: The wire-reel,which is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, is adapted to be readily applied to either side of a vehicle, and in attaching it to the same it may be secured to the adjacent standard or to the other standard of the body. The fence-wire may be readily gathered and uniformly wound on spools, and the device may be readily thrown out of gear when desired. The top and bottom faces of the oscillating guide are disposed at an inclination, and the edges are bent upward and downward to prevent wire from catching on them, and a long narrow opening is provided for the wire to pass through, and at the same time kinks and bends are permitted to pass through the said opening without catching on the guide. The tension device, which is capable of ready adj ustment, secures the spool to the spool-shaft and permits the former to slip on the latter to prevent the wire from breaking and also to avoid straining the parts as the wire accumulates on the spool.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of this invention.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame provided with means for connecting it to the body of a wagon, inner and outer bands journaled on each other, one of the bands being connected with the frame and the other being designed to be secured to one of the wheels of the vehicle, a spool-shaft, and gearing for connecting the spool-shaft with the vehicle-wheel, substantially as described. 4

means for connecting the guide with the spoolshat't, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, braces arranged atthe top'of the frame and adapted to engage the upper edges of a wagon-body, a tie-rod for securing the frame to the body, means for journaling the frame on one of the wheels of the body, a spool-shaft, and gearing for connecting the spoolshaft with the vehiclewheel, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, th combination with a wagon, of a frame secured to the wagon-body and journaled on one of the wagon-wheels, a spool-shaft mounted on the frame, and gearing for connecting the spool-shaft with the wheel, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame provided with means for journaling it on one of the wheels of a wagon, braces connected to the top of the frame and provided with notches to receive the upper edges of the adjacent side of the wagon-body, and a tie-rod located between the braces and provided with a hook adapted to engage one of the standards, a spool-shaft mounted on the frame, and gearing for connecting the spool-shaft with the wagon-wheel, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of an inner band provided with means for securing it to a wheel, and having inner and outer annular flanges, an outer band arranged between the flanges and provided with outwardly extending arms, a frame mounted on the arms of the outer band and provided with means for engaging a wagonbody, a spool-shaft, and gearing for connecting the same with the wagon-wheel, substantially as described.

In a device of the class described, the combination of an inner band provided with fastening devices extending inward from it, slotted plates receiving the fastening devices and adapted to span the spaces between the spokes of a wheel and engage the same, an outer band arranged on the inner band, a frame secured to the outer band, a spool-shaft mounted on the frame, and gearing for connecting the spool-shaft with the wheels, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of an inner band provided with a toothed flange and designed to be secured to a wheel, an outer band journaled on the inner band, a frame secured to the outer band and designed to be connected with a wagonbody, a spool-shaft mounted on the frame and provided with a pinion, and a pinion meshing with the said pinion and the teeth of the inner band, and adapted to throw the reel into and out of gear, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of an ann ular band provided with means for engaging a wheel and having a toothed flange, an outer band, a frame secured to the outer band, a spool-shaft, and gearing connecting the spool-shaft with the toothed flange, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame designed to be journaled on a wagon-wheel and secured to the wagon-body, a gear-wheel connected with the wagon-wheel, a spool-shaft mounted on the frame and connected with and operated by the said gear-wheel, a worm mounted on the spool-shaft, a crank-shaft arranged at right angles to the spool-shaft and provided with a pinion meshing with the said worm, and an oscillating guide connected with and operated by the crank-shaft, substantially as described.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame designed to be mounted on a wagon, a spool-shaft journaled on the frame and provided with a worm, gearing for connecting the spool-shaft with one of the vehicle-wheels, a standard mounted on the frame, a crank-shaft arranged at right angles to the spool-shaft and provided with a pinion meshing with the worm, said crankshaft being journaled on the standard,an oscillating guide operatin g in advance of the spoolshaft, and a bar or rod connected with the crank-shaft and with the guide, substantially as described.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a spool-shaft journaled on the frame, a bracket located in ad- :vance of the spool-shaft and provided with upper and lower arms, an oscillating guide located in front of the spool-shaft, pivoted to the upper arm of the bracket and guided by the lower arm of the same, and gearing for connecting the guide with the spool-shaft, substantially as described.
13. In a device of the class described, a guide provided at opposite sides with posts located out of alinement, one of the posts being located in advance of the other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
14. In a device of the class described, a guide comprising upper and lower inclined plates and vertical posts connecting the plates and arranged out of alinement, one of the posts being located in advance of the other, substantially as, described.
15. In a device of the class described, th combination of a frame, inner and outer bands, the outer band being provided with arms secured to the frame, a shield arranged at the top of the frame and interposed between the same and one of the arms, a spool shaft mounted on the frame, and gearing lo cated beneath the shield and connecting the spool-shaft with' the inner band, substantially as described.

composed of two bars or members and provided at their inner faces with recesses to receive the shaft and engaging the same, and adjusting devices connecting the ends of the bars or members, substantially as described. 17. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a rod secured to the frame, a tubular spool-shaft arranged on the rod, and an inner bearing-tube arranged on the rod and interposed between the same and the spool-shaft, substantially as described.
18. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame provided with a guide, inner and outer bands, the inner band being provided With teeth and the outer band being secured to the frame, a spool-shaft having a pinion, an intermediate pinion meshing with the said pinion and with the teeth of the Vprovided with vertical sides or posts rounded J OI-IN B. BENDER.
