SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 613,453, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed March 26 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FISHER H. LIPPINCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1. is a longitudinal section of a pencil in which my invention is embodied; Fig. 2, a transverse section, enlarged, on line as 00, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, a plan view of the follower detached.
The general nature of my invention is a tubular sheath or holder, preferably of wood, adapted to receive an ordinary lead or crayon, with which holder is combined a dog or follower that extends through a longitudinal slot in the holder, into the bore thereof, and has a, tooth within the bore, which tooth when the follower is depressedby pressure of the thumb or finger upon the part that projects from the said slot will be caused to bite or sink into the wall of the bore and so prevent the lead from being retracted, but may be released by elevating the follower, thus raising the said tooth above the wall of the bore, and thereby permitting the follower to be pushed forward to cause the lead to protrude from the end of the holder the desired distance.
The precise character of the improvement will clearly appear from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
1 is the sheath or holder, whose external form is similar to that of an ordinary wooden lead-pencil. It has a longitudinal bore 2 and a slot 3, communicating therewith,which is of less width than the diameter of the bore.
4 is the follower, which projects from and extends through the slot into the bore and has a tooth or projection 5, that is preferably inclined toward the rear. It has also a part 6 within the bore whose width is greater than that of the slot and whose thickness is less than the bore,whereby it (the follower) is prevented from escaping laterally through the slot, and also permits a lateral or tilting movement of the follower. I usually bend over the forward end of the part 6, 'as seen in Fig. 1, so as to form a head 8 to abut against the lead Serial No. 675,209. (No model.)
or crayon 7. The portion of the follower proj ectin g beyond the sheath has in this instance a cut-under notch 9, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
In using the device the follower is inserted in the rear end of the bore and slot, (which may afterward be plugged or closed up to prevent accidental escape of the follower,) or it may be pushed in at the forward end, if the slot be made to extend to that end, or it may be inserted, as in the present instance, previous to cementing together the two halves of the holder, as is'usually done. The lead having been inserted within the bore, which, I remark, should be made so that there will be sufficient friction (preferably at or near the forward end only) to prevent the lead from falling out, and the follower being at the rear end of the lead, if now it (the follower) be pushed forward the tooth 5 will ride upon or be raised above the wall of the bore andthe lead will be advanced and so protruded the desired distance from the front end of the holder. Pressure is then applied to the follower so as to sink its tooth 5 into the wood, and thus prevent the lead from retracting by the pressure on the point in writing or otherwise. Should it happen, however, that the follower be pushed too far, and thus too much of the lead be projected from the holder, it (the follower) may be drawn back, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, by first raising or tilting it sufficiently to release the tooth, which may be conveniently done by inserting the thumb or finger nail in the notch 9.
The follower may be made in various forms, each embodying the essential features of that part of the inventionthat is to say, the part adapted to extend through the slot and into the bore, the-tooth, and means for preventing the device from escaping laterally through the said slot, yet permitting the hereinbeforementioned raising or tilting of the follower.
Having thus described my invention, I
.claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-e l. The combination of the holder of wood, or the like, having the bore and the slot commnnicatin g therewith, and the longitudinallymovable follower extending through said slot into the bore and movable in the direction of the plane of the slot and having the tooth, and
means for preventing the device from escaping laterally through said slot, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the holder of wood or the like having the bore and the slot communicating therewith of less Width than the diameter of the bore, and the follower consisting of an integral piece of metal or other suitable material, extending through said slot and into said bore, and having the tooth adapted to enter the wall of the bore when the device is pressed toward the latter and the part within the bore whose width transversely to the slot is greater than that of said slot and whose thickness is less than the diameter of the bore, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
