UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNIE M. GALLAND, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
EMBROIDERY-DISPLAY PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,366, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed September 25, 1897. Serial No. 653,006- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANNIE M. GALLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing; at New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Protectin g and Display Package for Measurable Dry Goods, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved package or envelop for displaying measurable dry goods-such as embroideries, trimmings, and the likewhich means also acts to protect the said goods from becoming soiled.
Experience has demonstrated that measurable dry goods, such as trimmings and the like, as ordinarily displayed in suitable rolls or folded upon a card are continually becoming so soiled by handling that there is urgent need of a means whereby the said goods may be neatly packed and protected and at the same time be available for examination without handling or exposing the goods to damage from dust. In cities Where soft coal is burned or where a great amount of dust or soot permeates the air merchants have found that there there is a great percentage of loss in handling goods of this character by reason of the same becoming soiled, even while packed away upon shelves in the ordinary manner. For these reasons it is my object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective means whereby the goods may be suitably packed in a combined protecting and display envelop, the said means shielding at all times the contents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of my improved protecting and display'envelop, the same being open. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section through said envelop. Fig. 3 is a rear view of my combined protecting and display envelop closed, and Fig. 4 is a front view of the same.
A is a wrapper or blank, formed of paper or other suitable material, having wings, so that the same will fold into the form of a shallow box or envelop to inclose the goods B,
which may be wound upon asuitable reel D, carried by a protecting and reinforcing frame E for the envelop or box. The frame carries the reel-card preferably in the manner described in my earlier application for United States Letters Patent, serially numbered 631,7 91.
F is a suitable means by which the package or box may be held in a closed position, the same being provided,by preference,in the rear side of the box. In the front case of the box is an opening or window through which the contents of the package are visible. To prevent the said contents from becoming soiled, I provide a suitable transparent film G of flexible and non-frangible material with in said package and covering said opening.
From the above it will be seen that by this means I am enabled to readily display the contents of the box without permitting the prospective purchaser to handle or soil the goods, which means also serves to protect the goods even while they lie upon the shelves or counters, thereby resulting in an immense saving to the venders of this class of goods when the quantity and character of the goods sold are considered.
That I claim is In a combined packing and display pack age for measurable dry goods and the like, an internal supporting and reinforcing frame, an external removable wrapper inclosing said frame and reinforced thereby, an opening in one side of said'wrapper, and a transparent closure of flexible and non-frangible material for said opening, said closure being located within said wrapper, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 21st day of September, 1897.
ANNIE M. GALLAND.
