ROBERT COYLE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ELIAS (J. ATKINS, OF SAME PLACE.
ROTARY PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,827, dated October 25, 1898.
Application filed August 10, 1897.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT COYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Rotary Plows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to provide means whereby the operator may easily shift the position of the land carrier-wheel relatively to the other plow parts; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a rotary plow embodying my present invention; Fig. 2, a View of the central portion thereof, on an enlarged scale, as seen from the dotted vation as seen from the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the main frame part of the plow; B, the axle; O, the staggered furrow carrier-wheel; D, the land carrier-wheel; E, an arm on which said wheel is mounted, and F a screw-shaft by which the arm carrying it is operated.
The frame A is preferably of a form similar to that shown in Letters Patent No. 543,118, granted Atkins and Roberts July 23, 1895, and carries an arm A and the plows A and A as well as the various other parts of the plow mechanism.
The shaft B is secured to the frame A and to an arm A thereon. It is bent at a central point, so that one end is in advance of the other, as indicated in Fig. 1. Strongly secured to the outer end thereof is a bracket B. Said bracket is also preferably secured to the arm A on the frame A.
The staggered furrow or guide carrier-wheel O is of a usual form. The construction shown is that wherein this wheel is adapted to be raised and lowered in operation, so as to run either in the bottom of a furrow or on the level surface, as may be desired, and includes a slide, which carries its spindle, and a rack Serial No. 647,671. (No model.)
and lever for operating the same. It is shown in its raised position, as when positioned to run on the same level as the land carrierwheel D. Said land carrier-wheel is also of a usual and well-known construction and is mounted on its spindle D, which is carried from the arm E. Said wheel D has a long hub d, with a suitable bearing-face, which bears against a similar face on said arm, as indicated in Fig. 1.
The arm E is pivoted 011 the shaftB and carries the spindle D. It extends beyond said shaft B and develops into a screw-gear segment E, as shown most plainly in Fig. 2.
The shaft F is mounted in a long sleevelike hearing in the bracket 13' and carries the worm f on its end, which engages with and is adapted to operate the segment E on the end of the arm E. It is provided at the upper end with the hand-wheel F, by which it may be conveniently operated and which is located near the drivers seat S.
By means of this construction and arrangement it is possible for the driver to easily cause the land carrier-wheel D to occupy such position relative to the other parts of the plow as may be desired and without dismounting and to accurately adjust said parts in relation to each other, while they will remain in adjusted position without other means of retention than the natural friction of the parts, all as will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a rotary plow, the combination, of the frame, the plows carried thereby, the axle, the carrier-wheels, an arm E formed with a hub or bearing between its ends and mounted by I means thereof to rock on the end of said shaft and carrying a spindle on one end on which the land carrier-wheel is mounted and having a segmental rack formed on its other end with which a worm on an operating-shaft F engages, and said operating-shaft F mounted in a suitable supporting-bracket, whereby said land carrier-wheel may be manipulated to raise andlower the plow-frame, independently of the wheel on the opposite side of the frame, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a rotary plow, of the frame having the arm A the bent axle B, the bracket B on the end thereof, the arm E pivoted on the end of said axle and having a segment 011 one end and a bearing for the earrier-wheel spindle on the other, said spindle, the carrier-wheel mounted thereon, and the screw-shaft F mounted in said bracket and having the worm f which engages with said segment, the whole being arranged and oper- 1o ating substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 6th day of August, A.- D. 1897.
