To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. KAISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnson, in the county of \Vhitman and State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates, and especially to a sliding rack-and-pinion gate, in which the gate is adapted to be opened and closed by means of an anton1atically-operated device which when being depressed causes the gate to slide longitudinally and be opened or closed.
More specifically, the present invention resides in the provision of a sliding gate having a rack-and-pinion device and a tilting shaft or shafts carrying a segment which is adapted to gear with a pinion wheel, which latter meshes with the rack secured to the gate, and a swinging plate having projections on opposite sides which when tilted back and forth are adapted to engage with the outer of the rods to which the segment is secured and rock the rods carrying the segment and cause the pinion-wheel to rotate in one direction oranother, which will cause the gate to open and close. a
I provide means for automatically bringing the plates which carry the lugs adapted to tilt the segment-carrying shafts to their vertical position, and with the same the wagonengaging cranks, which latter are connected by suitable rods to the swinging plates, said means consisting of spring-arms which have their free ends connected to the said plates and are mounted on a.rod held at a suitable location on the gate-posts.
My invention will be clearly understood when taken in connection with the drawings which form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved gate, showing the gate closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 3 show ing one of the swinging plates carrying the lugs depressed, which causes the gate to be opened. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the gate, the gate being shown as open.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame work or platform of the gate upon which the posts B B are mounted, between which the gate O is adapted to slide on suitable antifriction-rollers D. To the lower longitudinal strip of the gate is fastened a rack-bar E, with teeth along its lower margin, and mounted in the platform in the shoulders A is a shaft A carrying a pinion-wheel F, the teeth of which are adapted to mesh with the teeth on the said rack-bar E. In order to rotate the said pinion-wheel in opposite directions, as may be desired, for the purpose of causing the gate to open or close, I provide the shaft G, which is journaled at its ends in the opposite ends of the frame or platform. On this shaft are carried the plates G, to which are secured the rods II II. Mounted on the said shaft G and rods II at a location near the said pinion-wheel is a segment-gear plate K, the teeth of which are adapted to mesh with the teeth of a wheel K. on the shaft carrying the said pinion-wheel. By this construction it will be noted that as the shaft G andirods H, carrying the segment-plate, are rocked the pinion-wheel will rotate in opposite direc tions and the gate will be opened and closed. In order to rock the shaft and rod carrying the segment-plate, I provide on each side of the gate the swinging plates M, which are pivoted at their lower longitudinal edges, as at M, to the ears m, fastened to the platform. On the opposite broad faces of thesaid plates are the integral notched lugs m, so placed that as the said plate is rocked backward and forward to horizontal positions one or the other of the said lugs will strike one or the other of the rods II, which will cause the same to rock in one direction or the other for the purpose of opening or closing the gate.
Connected to an integral hook M on each plate is one end of a rod Q, the other end of which is pivoted to the U-shaped operatingcrank R, the ends of which are pivoted to a block S, located a suitable distance from the gate and adjacent to or in the track of the roadway, whereby the wheel of the wagon passing may be guided over the said operating-crank, which will depress the same, and, through its connection with the swinging plate, will cause the latter to be depressed, and through connections between the latter and the rocking shaft cause the gate to open. After the gate has been opened and the wheel has left the said crank-opener the swinging plate, as well as the crank, is brought to its starting position by means of a coiled spring T, which is mounted on a rod T, fastened to the tops of two of the gate-posts. This spring has its ends outwardly and downwardly extended and connected to the plates M. Vhen the said plates are depressed, the spring-arms are under tension, and when the weight of the wagon is removed the said arms will cause the swinging plates to swing up into an upright position, as shown in the drawings. After the wagon has passed through the gateopening and the wheels come in contact with the crank on the opposite side of the gate the said crank is depressed, which causes one of the lugs carried by the swinging plate to be depressed against the rocking shaft and causes the latter to rock and the gate to shut,
as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.. In a sliding gate, the combination with the platform, the posts and gate working on antifriction-wheels thereon, of the toothed rack secured to the gate, the rocking shaft, the toothed segment-plate carried by said shaft, and designed to mesh with a geared wheel on the pinion-carrying shaft, of the parallel rods carried by the rocking shaft, and a pivoted plate and means for depressing the same, whereby the rock-shaft may be tilted, as set forth. Y
2. In a sliding gate, the combination with the gate mounted on a suitable platform as described, the rack-bar secured to said gate, a pinion-wheel meshing with said bar, a rockshaft mounted in the platform, plates carried by said shaft, and parallel rods mounted in said plates, of the segment-plate mounted on said shaft and rods, and adapted to mesh with a toothed wheel on the pinion-carrying shaft, the tilting plate mounted on the platform, means for tilting the same, and lugs carried on opposite sides of the plates, and adapted to bear against the said rods as the plate is depressed in opposite directions, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a sliding gate and means for opening and closing the same, the combination with the sliding gate mounted as described, the rack-bar thereon, the pinion-wheel meshing with the said rack-bar, rocking frame, the segment-plate carried thereby, and adapted to mesh with the toothed wheel on the pinioncarrying shaft, of the swinging plates pivoted to the platform, recessed lugs on opposite broad faces thereof, said lugs adapted as the plate is depressed in opposite directions, to cause the rock-shaft to tilt, and means for depressing the said plate and for returning it to its starting position.
4. The combination with the sliding gate, the swinging plates and means for opening and closing the gate as set forth, of the rod mounted on the gate-post, the coiled spring mounted on said rod, the ends of said coiled spring formed into arms, the ends of which engage with the plates for the purpose of returning the plates to an upright position after they have been depressed, and means for depressing the said plates, as set forth.
5. The combination with the gate mounted as described and the pivoted plate for rocking the shaft, to cause the gate to open and close as described, of the pivoted crank member which is adapted to be depressed by a wagon passing over the same, a rod connecting said crank with an integral portion of the said pivoted plate,and means as described for raising the plate after it has been tilted, as shown and described.
