NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. BURGESS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE RUSSELL & ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LCCK-CAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,397, dated October 18, 1898.
Application filed August 1, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BURGESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lock-cases; and the objects of my improvement are simplicity and economy in construction and efficiency and neatness of appearance in the article.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the upper edge of my lock-case. Fig. 2 is a like view of the body portion of the same, the cap being removed. Fig. 3 is a detached plan view of one of the fastening-plates; and Fig. 4 is a front View, partly in section, of my lock-case with the cap-plate removed.
Myinvention is herein illustrated as applied to a lock or latch case made in accordance with my Letters Patent No. 396,916, dated January 29, 1889. I have entitled my invention as a lock-case, but do not wish thereby to limit the same to a lock merely, as a case of the same construction may evidently be made for latches or for combined locks and latches.
The present improvement relates to the construction whereby the body of the case is secured to the face-plate.
As in my aforesaid patent the body of the case A is provided with side flanges 5 and recessed wings 6, and the cap B is provided with side flanges 7, having the projections 12 at their front ends for interlocking with the recessed wings. I now provide the said recessed wings 6 with lugs 8, which when first formed may stand in the same plane as the said recessedwings, asindicated by the broken lines 8, Fig. 2. The face-plate C is or may be mainly ofan ordinary construction. I
Serial No. 687,404. (No model.)
provide two fastening-plates D, having at one end a tongue 9 for being secured in a are of the same metal as the face-plate they may be finished so as to be scarcely visible on the face side of the face-plate. Said plates are preferably made long enough to extend back as far as the recessed wings 6 of the After securing the two fastening- 5 5 case-body. plates D to the face-plate C the face-plate and body of the case are placed together, with the fastening-plates extending into the case-body just inside of the recessed wings 6. The lugs 8 when these parts are first assembled should stand up straight, as indicated by the broken lines 8, Fig. 2. They are then struck by a suitable die, so as to bend them down into the shouldered recesses 10, as shown, the said lugs being wide enough to fill said recesses,
with one edge resting on the inner side of the face-plate and the opposite edge of said lugs resting against the shoulder of the said recess, whereby the face-plate is cheaply and firmly fastened to the body of the case. It should also be noted that if the fasteningplates are made long, as described, they close the recesses of the wings 6 on the inside, so as to assist in supporting the projections 12 of the cap B.
I claim as my invention The case, consisting of the faceplate, fastening-plates D having shouldered recesses and secured to said face-plate, and the casebody having the lugs 8 within the said shouldered recesses, substantially as described.
CHARLES M. BURGESS.
