SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,437, dated September 27, 1898.
Application filed April 25, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. OWENS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hillsborough, in the county of Hill and State of Texas, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in cultivators, and has for its object the provi sion of novel means for adjusting the central cultivator-beam carrying the foot or standard to which is secured the shovel transversely of the cultivator. Furthermore, the object of the invention is to produce a cultivator in which the fifth foot or central shovel can receive the adjustment above set forth independent of the longitudinal beams forming the frame.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, in Which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cultivator with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in section, of the adjusting mechanism. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the standards. Fig. 4: illustrates a modified mode of assembling the parts.
In the drawings I illustrate a cultivatorframe consisting of two parallel longitudinal beams 1, to which are secured in any suitable manner shovels 2. Transversely of the frame I arrange a beam 3, mounted to reciprocate therebetween, and depending from the beam centrally thereof I arrange a shovel 4. Each end of the beam is provided with an eye 5, which receives a standard 6, said standard having a shoulder 7, which limits its downward movement. Each standard is cranked, as at 8, so that a manipulation seal to. 678,775. (No'modeh) thereof will operate the beam, as stated. A movable collar 9 is also provided for each standard and is made adjustable thereon for the purpose of allowing the standard to be set in a ring or socket 10, attached to the cultivator-frame.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that when the cultivator is used in rows which are crooked it will only be necessary for the operator to exert pressure on the fifth foot on one side or the other, and by reason of the cranked standards the beam can be thrown from side to side.
While some users may prefer to have a handle connected to the beam or fifth foot for manipulating the parts, I have found in practice that sufficient pressure can be exerted by the foot of the operator. I have also found that this manipulation can be accomplished without the loss of time.
The construction, operation, and advantages will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that changes in the proportions and other details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. For instance, the parts may be assembled as illustrated in Fig. 4., when the pressure for manipulating the parts would be exerted on the lower end of the standard, while in the construction shown in Fig. 2 the adjustment is accomplished by pressure on the upper end.

In combination with a plow-frame, a transverse beam having an eye formed at each end, cranked standards each having one end fitting in bearings of the frame, the upper ends of the standards fitting in the eyes of the beam, as and for the purpose described.
