To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ENOCH HENRY EATON,
a citizen'of the United States of America, and a resident of Moulton, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, have invented a neitY and useful Rotary. Enginejof which the fol-- lowing is a specification.
The obfeet of vthis invention is to provide improved means for 1utilizing the expansive force of steam for the propulsion ofmech- My yinvention consists in the. construction, arrangement,l and combination of i elements hereinafter set forth, 'pointed out in my claim,-

In the construction of the engine as shown the numeral 10..designates the main shaft,
mounted forrotation in bearings 11 l2, formed in or fixed to the sides 13 14 of theenginc- -casing. The sides 13 14 of the casing'are circular, and a rim 15 is mounted on the peripheries thereof and secured thereto. The inner or adjacent faces of the sides 13 14 of the casing are plane and equidistant at all points from each other, being parallel and of the same thickness. Mounted rigidly on the same shaft 10 is a piston-head 1G of cylindrieal form and of less diameter than the inner diameter of the casing, thus formingr an annular steam-chamber vbetween the periphery of the piston and the axial face of the casing-rim 15, which steam-chamber is traversed radially of the main shaft by a wing;` or head 17, fixed to the piston 16 and projecting from the periphery' thereof. I claim as my inventionv A rotary engine comprising the following elements in combination, to wit: a casing having ingress and egress portsyaconcentric piston `mounted within said casing; a
gate 20 mounted for reciprocation trans` vcrsely of the casing; a lever mounted for oscillation; a stem connecting one end of the Y lever with the gate 20;\a pitinan connected `to the other aendl of the lever; guides mounted on the casingand laterally extended therefrom to receiveand guide the pitman; a pin laterally extended from the lower end of the pitman and provided with a beveled head 33; aginain shaft carrying the concentric piston; a wheel mounted'on` the main shaft and pro` vided with a cam-groove in its face adjacent to the easing,iwhich cam-groove is reamed out and undercut to receive the beveled head 33 and widened at the rentrant portion thereof to permit removal and insertion of said'head therein; a steam-chestmounted on the cas,-
ing; a slide-valve in said steaimchest controlling the ingress-ports to the casing;` a hell-crank lever mounted on the casing and connecting at one end to the slide-valve; `an eccentric connected to the other end of the bell-crank lever; an eccentric wheel or disk mounted on the main shaft and connected with the eccentric; and a power-.wheel mounted on the main shaft.
