UNITED STATES PATENT Enron...
APPARATUS FOR MAKING GAS FROM OIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,994, dated September 20, 1898.
Application filed February 9 1898. Serial No. 669,668. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I ,FRANCIS L. MARTENETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chico, county of Butte, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Apparatus for Generating Gas from Oil; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to "apparatus for generating gas from oil; and it consists of the construction and combination of parts which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
In the accompanying drawing I illustrate a sectional view of an apparatus constructed according to my invention.
A is a receiver of any suitable size and shape. In the upper part of this receiver is a, filling nozzle or passage B, which may be connected with any suitable source of supply, and the receiver A can thus be charged whenever desired.
C is an air-pump of any description, with suitable cocks and valves and a pressure-gage, as shown. This pump is connected with the chamber A, and by its means the air may be compressed therein to any desired degree.
D is a pipe through which the liquid contained in the chamber is forced out, said pipe having a valve D for controlling and regulating the flow of liquid through the pipe and its connected coil. This liquid may be either oil or water, and in either case it is forced through the pipe D into a coil E, sit-. uated within a heating-furnace F. This f urnace may be of any suitable or desired description. I have here shown it having an ash-pit below the grate, with sliding doors G, by which the draft is regulated and through which when opened the ashes may be removed. The top of the furnace has a cap H, from which the escape-flue or chimney I rises, and upon one side is a lid or cover J, through which fuel may be introduced. The coil E receives the liquid, which is forced thereinto from the chamber A, and in passing around the coil it is vaporized and raised to a high temperature, being superheated if it be steam and highly vaporized if it be an oil-vapor.
K is a delivery-pipe through which its vapor is discharged, the pipe being provided with a jet-nozzle, as shown at L. Opening into this pipe at a point adjacent to the jet-nozzle is another pipe M. This pipe connects with a second coil or heater M within the furnace F, and this coil is supplied with air from the opposite or inlet end. The action of the jet at L is similar to that of an injector, and by its action a vacuum is produced in the pipe M, through which the heated air is drawn and mingled with the vapor, which is discharged through the pipe K and nozzle L.
If the device is to be simply for heating purposes, the vapor of water maybe employed, which becomes highly superheated by passing through this furnace. If intended for lighting purposes, the vapor will be that of oil, and the air mixed with it at the jet L will be so regulated that the resulting compound becomes as illuminating or a heating medium of high power.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved apparatus for generating gas from oil, consisting of a furnace, a heatingcoil contained wholly therein, a chamber adapted to receive liquid to be vaporized, an air-forcing mechanism connecting with said chamber so as to exert a pressure therein to force the liquid from the chamber and through the coil, a pipe connecting the chamber with the coil, a delivery-pipe connected with the outlet end of the coil and a jet-nozzle connected with said pipe, a second coil within the furnace directly above the first-named coil, having an air-inlet at one end and having the opposite end connected with a pipe which joins the discharge-pipe of the first-named coil proximate to the jet-nozzle.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANCIS L. MARTENETTE.
