Be it known that I, KATHARIN ELIZA LAN-j DAU,4 a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Machines, of which .the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ironing-machines and the object thereof is to provide animproved device of this class which is simple in construction and operationand which may be used in private houses or in laundries and Wherever such machines are required.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following 'speciicatiom of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a sectional side view of my improved ironing-machine; and Fig. 2, an end view thereof, part of theconstruction being broken away and part shown in section.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvementare designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a machine for the purpose herein specified which consists of a frame composed of ends 5 and a top crossbar G, and the ends 5 are preferably composed of angularframes, as shown in Fig. 2, which are providedwith upwardly-directed extensions 7, with which the top cross-bar 6 is connected.
Mounted in the bottoni of the end frames is a treadle-'plate 8,- With which is connected a treadle-rod 9, which is connected with a crank 10, formed on or secured to a shaft 11,'which passes centrally through one of the 4end frames and is provided with a gear-wheel l2 on the outer end thereof.
Mounted centrally of the top of the main frames 5 is a hollow roller 13, which is provided at each end with a tubular hub 14, and said tubular hubs project through the end frames, and one of said hubs is provided with a gear-wheel 15, which operates in connection with the gear-wheel 12 on 'the crank-shaft l1, and passing through said I tubular hubs and through said hollow roller 12S-is a gas-burner tube 16, provided with burner-tips 17, any desired number of which may be employed, and one end of said burnertube is provided with a exible tube 18, by which gas is supplied thereto, and the opposite endof said burner-tube is mounted in and secured in a bracket 19, secured to the adjacent end frame, by means of which said burner-tube is prevented from turning, and said end of said burner-tubeis also provided with a iiexible tube 20..

Connected with the upper end of the pressing-iron 23 and centrally thereof is a chain or cord 29, one end of whichis connected with a pulley 30, mounted in the topbar C vof the frame and centrally thereof, and the shaft 3l of the pulley. 30 is provided with a crank 32, and secured to the bar 6 adjacent to said pulley and transversely thereof is a supplemental bar 33, in which is formed a plurality of openings or perforations 3a, and the crank 32 is provided with a pin S5, which passes Atherethrough and which is adapted to be passed IOO ' gas may be ignited in the roller 13 and in through either of the holesor openings 311 in the supplemental bar 33. The pin 35 is adapted to be removed from both the crank 32 and the bar 33, and by means of this construction the pressing-iron 23 may be raised whenever desired.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description When taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
'It will be understood that the gas is su pplied to the tube 16 through the pipe 13 and to the pipe 26 through the pipe 20, and the the pressing-iron 23 whenever desired through the openings 21 and 28. The roller 13 and the pressing-iron 23 are highly heated by the burning gas therein, and in practice the roller 13 is revolved by mean-s of the treadle 8 and the operative devices in connection therewith, including the treadle-rod 9, the shaft 11, the crank l0, and the wheels 12 and 15, and the articles to be ironed are passed between the roller 13 and the pressing-iron 23, and said pressing-iron is held in position by the springs 25 and is adapted to yield sufficiently to allow the articles to pass freely through between the same and the roller 13. The strength of the springs 25 may be adjusted in any desired manner, and other springs may be placed over the projections 24 in the slots or openings 22, and the said pressing-iron may be raisedsto any desired point and heldin any desired position by the crank 32 and the devices connected therewith.
My improved ironing-machine may be employed orironing all kinds or classes of articles or garments, and my inveutionis not lim` itcd to the means herein described for revolving the roller 13, and any suitable device may.v
be employed for this purpose.
Having fully described my invention, l claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- 1. A'n ironing-machine, comprising a suitable frame, a hollow cylindrical roller mounted therein and provided at each end with tubularhubs, a vertically-movable hollow pressing-iron mounted above said roller and adaptroller and for preventing ed to rest thereon, the under surface of which conforms to the surface of said roller, said pressing-iron being substantially of the same length as said roller, and being also provided at its opposite' ends with projections, one of which is tubular in form, springs by which said pressing-iron is depressed into cont-act with said roller, gas burner tubes mounted in said pressing-iron and in said roller, and extending longitudinallythereof, the burnertube in the pressing-iron beingl projected through one end thereof, and the burner-tube in the roller being projected through both ends thereof, said burner-tubes being in corninunication at one end, and one of said tubes being provided with a gas-supply pipe at the opposite end, and means for revolving said the movementof the gas-pipe therein, substantially as shown and described.
2. An ironing-machine, comprising -a suitable frame, a hollowr cylindrical roller mounted therein and provided at each end with tubular hubs, a vertically-movable hollow pressing-iron mounted above said rollerand adapted'to rest thereon, the under surface of which conforms tothe`surface of said roller, said pressing-iron being substantially of the same length as said roller, and being'also provided at its opposite ends with project-ions, one of which is tubular in form, springs by which said pressing-iron is depressed into contact with said roller, gas-burner tubes mountedin said pressing-iron and in said roller, and extending longitudinally thereof, the burnertube in the pressing iron being projected through one end thereof, and the burner-tube in ther roller being projected through both ends thereof, said burner-tubes being in coinmunication at one end, and the burner-tube in the roller being provided with a gas-supply pipe at its opposite end, and means for revolving said roller, and for raising the pressing-iron against the operation ofthe springs by which it is depressed, substantially as shown and described.
3. An ironing-machine, comprising a suitable frame, a hollow cylindrical roller mounted therein and provided at each end with tubularhubs,a vertically-movable hollow pressing-iron mounted above said roller and adapted to rest thereon, the under surface'of which conforms to the surface of said roller, said pressing-iron being substantially of the same length as said roller, and being also provided at its opposite ends with projections, one of' which is tubular in form, springs by which -said pressing-iron is depressed in-to' contact withsaid roller, gas-burner tubes mountedin said pressing-iron and in said roller, and eX- 'tending longitudinally thereof, the burnertube in the pressingiron being projected through one end thereof, and the burner-tube in the roller being projected through both ends thereof, said burner-tubes being in communication at one end, and the burner-tube in the roller being provided with a gas-supply pipe at its opposite end, and means for revolving said'roller, and for raising the pressing-iron against the operation of the springs by which it is depressed, consisting of a pulley mounted in said frame above said pressingiron, a chain mounted thereon and connected with said iron, and a lever connected with the shaft of said pulley and operating in connection with a locking device secured to said frame, substantially as shown and described.
