To 011% whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, PETER J OHN POELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders or Guards for Cars, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fenders or guards for cars; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed to prevent a person or object from passing under the car, and thus avoid the serious and sometimes fatal accidents which follow the striking of a person or object by a car when in motion, a further object being to provide a combined fender and brake in which the brake is operated by the fender.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompany ing drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of the bottom of a car provided with my improved fender; Fig. 2, a front end View thereof, and Fig. 3 a bottom plan view.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have indicated at 5 the bottom of a car, and in the practice of my invention I connect with the bottom of the car, a short distance rearwardly of the front end thereof, a cross-plate 6, which is provided at each end with a downwardly-directed hanger or arm,
.or these arms or hangers 7 may be formed separately and secured to the car in any desired manner, and mounted therein is a shaft 8, which is provided centrally with an upwardly-directed arm 9 and a forwardly and upwardly curved arm 10, which is provided at its front end with a downwardly-directed hook 11, which passes through the eye 12 of a verticallymovable rod 13, which passes loosely through the bottom of the car and is providedat its upper end with a head 14. The shaft 8 is also provided at each end with a downwardly-directed arm 15, with each of which is connected a forwardly-directed rod 16, with each of which is pivotally connected a backwardly-directed arm 17, and the arms 17 are rigidly connected with a cross-head 18, the ends of which are connected with de-- pending arms 19, which are pivotally connected with hangers 20, secured to the bottom of the car, and the lower ends of which support a cross-rod 21.
The upwardly-directed arm 9 of the shaft 8 is pivotally connected with a horizontal bar 22, the rear end of which is connected with a pin 23, which is secured to the end of a horizontal sliding bar2et, mounted in a keeper 25, secured to the bottom of the car, and connected with the bottom of said keeper is an expansive spiral spring 26, the forward end of which is connected with the lower end of the pin 23, by means of which the bars 22 and 24 are connected.
Rearwardly of the keeper 23, which is arranged centrally of the bottom of the car, are two transverse plates 27 and 28, each of which is provided at its opposite end with down wardly-directed arms or hangers 29; but the transverse bars or plates 27 and 28 are not absolutely essential and the arms or hangers 29 may be formed separately, if desired, and secured to the bottom of the car in any desired manner.
Mounted in the forward downwardly-directed arms or hangers 29 is a shaft 30, which is provided centrally with an upwardly and forwardly directed arm 31, which in the normal position of the parts rests against the rear end of the bar 24:, as shown in Fig. 1,
and secured to the opposite ends of the shaft 30 are downwardly and forwardly directed arms 32. The rear arms or hangers 29 are also provided with a shaft 33, which is mounted therein, and the ends of which are provided with downwardly and forwardly directed arms 31, rigidly secured thereto, and the arms 32 and 34 are pivotally connected at the lower ends with the sides of the fender proper,which consists of a yoke-shaped frame comprising sides 35 and the forwardly-directed cross head or bar 36, and secured to the rear ends of the sides 35 in any desired manner are brakes 38, which are designed to bear upon the wheels 39 of the car, and connected with the bottom of the car rearwardly of said wheels is a hanger 40, with which is' connected acontractile spring 41, the forward end of which is connected with a central arm 42, similar to the arms 34, and the rear end of which is pivotally connected with the shaft 33 and. the front end thereof pivotally connected with a cross-rod 43, by means of which the side arms 34 are connected with the sides 35 of the main fender. The arms 32 of the shaft 30 are also connected with the sides of the main fender by a cross-rod 44, and the main fender-frame is provided with a network 45, composed of any desired material, which extends backwardly and upwardly over or between the arms 32 and over or between the arms 34 and over the arm 42 and is connected with the rear shaft 33. v
The main fender, as hereinbefore stated, consists of the yoke-shaped frame 35 and the parts connected therewith and which are normally held in the position shown in Fig. 1, while the front depending arms 19, the cross-rod 21 at the bottom thereof, and other parts connected therewith constitute a front guard by means of which the main fender or guard may be lowered adjacent to the ground and the brakes 38 thrown into operation, and the rod 21 of the forward guard may be provided with cushion-rollers, if desired, and the cross-rod 18, which forms a part of said guard, may also be cushioned, so as to prevent injury to a person struck thereby when the car is in motion.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof: Suppose the parts of the apparatus to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 and the car to be in motion. If a person or object should be struck by the forward guard, the arm 9 of the shaft 8 will be forced forwardly, carrying with it the bars 22 and 24. This operation would release the arm 31 of the shaft 30, and the main fender would drop downwardly, the spring 42 aiding in this operation, and the brakes 38 would be thrown in contact with the wheels 39. If the person or object should pass beneath the forward guard, said person or object would be received on the main fender, which would be close to or adjacent to the ground or the rails of the track, and the passage of such person or object beneath the car would be prevented. This operation of the parts of the apparatus is automatic, as will be readily understood, and is occasioned by the striking of a person or object by the forward guard. If, however, the driver or motorman should see a person or object on the track and be desirous of operating the fender, as hereinbefore described, and lowering it into position, all that is necessary is to force downwardly the vertically-movable rod 13, and the operation of the various parts of the apparatus will be the same as that hereinabove described when a person or object is struck by the front guard.
It will be understood that the forward part of the bottom 5 constitutes the platform of the car, on which the driver or motorman stands, and my improved apparatus is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and, if desired, when my improved fender or guard is used in connection with an electric car the arrangement maybe such that the dropping of the fender and the throwing of the brakes into operation will operate to disconnect the power or close the current, and thus to bring the car to a stop.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with the bottom and platform of a car, of a guard pivotally connected with the bottom of the platform and normally held in a vertical position, a shaft which forms a part of said guard, a sliding spring-operated bar mounted beneath the bottom of the car and connected with said shaft, transverse shafts mounted rearwardly of the rear end of said sliding bar, one of which is provided with an arm which abuts against the end of said bar, side arms connected with said shafts, a fender-frame pivotally connected with said side arms, and a spring secured to the bottom of the car rearwardly of said shafts and operating to throw the f ender-frame downwardly, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the bottom and platform of a car, of a guard pivotally connected with the bottom of the platform and normally held in a vertical position, a shaft which forms a part of said guard, a sliding spring-operated bar mounted beneath the bottom of the car and connected with said shaft, transverse shafts mounted rearwardly of the rear end of said sliding bar, one of which is provided with an arm which abuts against the end of said bar, side arms connected with said shafts, a fender-frame pivotally connected with said side arms, and a spring secured to the bottom of the car rearwardly of said shafts and operating to throw the fender-frame downwardly, said fender-frame being also provided with brakes which are adapted to operate in connection with the wheels of the car, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with the bottom of a car and platform thereof, of a guard pivotally supported beneath the platform and normally held in a vertical position, a transverse shaft which forms a part of said guard, a vertically-movable pin passing through the platform and connected with said shaft, a sliding bar connected with an arm secured to said shaft, a supplemental bar pivotally connected with the rear end of said sliding bar, and mounted in a keeper secured to the bottom of the car, a spring for drawing said bars backwardly,transverse shafts mounted rearwardly of said keeper, one of which is provided with an arm which abuts against the rear end of said supplemental bar, side arms connected with said shafts, and a main fender connected with said side arms and normally held in a raised position, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination with the bottom of a car and platform thereof, of a guard pivotally supported beneath the platform and normally held in a vertical position, a transverse shaft which forms a part of said guard, a vertically-movable pin passing through the platform and connectedwith said shaft, a sliding bar connected with an arm secured to said shaft, a supplemental bar pivotally connected with the rear end of said sliding bar, and mounted in a keeper secured to the bottom of the car, a spring for drawing said bars backwardly, transverse shafts mounted rearwardly of said keeper, one of which is provided with an arm which abuts against the rear end of said supplemental bar, side arms connected with said shafts, and a main fender connected with said side arms and normally held in a raised position, said fender being provided with brakes, and a spring which operates to draw the fender downwardly, substantially as shown and described.
