Description

Patented spt. is, |898.
B. HASKELL.
CARPET SWEEPER.
(Application l'ed Mar. 11, 1898.
VVITNESSES:
UNITED STATES- PATENT FFICE.
BRODERICK HASKELL, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of .Letters Patent No. 610,603, dated September 13, 1898.
Application filed March 11, 1898.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, BRODERICK HASKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefulmprovements inCarpet-Sweepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be -a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in carpet-sweepers; and its object is to provide the same with meansfor preventing the escape of fine dust from beneath the case and collecting the same; and it consists, essentially, in combining with a carpet-sweeper a blower to create an inward draft of air between the case and carpet and to discharge the same through a passage in which is a dust-collector, as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l isa transverse vertical section of .a device embodying my invention, taken on the line l l of Figs. 2 and 3; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a plan view of the same, with parts broken away to'show the construction.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents the case, of substantially the usual form, having the rotary brush E and means for rotating the same and provided with an opening A in one of its inclined sides for egress'of air from the blower and a door A through which to insert and remove the sponge G, which sponge is located in an airpassage B,- extending inward from the opening A to the blower-casing B. Said passage and casing are preferably formed'by a continuous strip of sheet metal extending hori- `zontally from the lower side of the opening A to about the middle of the case, and thence in a curve around the axis of the shaft carrying the fan terminating in an incomplete cylinder, leaving an opening for escape of air at the side toward the opening A. The end walls of this casing and passage are formed Serial No. 673,443. (No model.)
by flat plates, and the top of the passage from vthe casing of the fan to the opening A is in the end walls of the case A and provided with a driving-pulley H on its outer end', engaging the drive-wheel D of the sweeper to rotate the fan and induce an inward current of air between. the case and the carpet and an' outward current of air from said fan through the passage B. i
In operation the sponge Gis moistened with Water, and the current of air inward beneath the case and outward throughsaid sponge prevents the light dust from escaping from beneath the case and carries it into the sponge, where it is retained and from which it is easily removed by washing the sponge in water.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a carpetsweeper case having an opening for egress of air, a shaft having a pulley to engage a drive-wheel of the sweeper a fan on said shaft, a'casing and air-passage formed by a continuous strip lof sheet metal extending horizontally from the lower side of said opening to near the middle of the case, and thence in a curve about the axis of said shaft, and end plates having openings around said shaft, and a sponge in said passage, substantially as dea scribed.
2. In a carpetsweeper, a case having an egress-opening and a door in its top, an airpassage below said door, screensat each end Vof said air-passage, a sponge in said passage,
a fan-casing at the inner end of said passage having axial openings, a shaft in the axis of said casing having a pulley engaging the drive-wheel of the sweeper, and a fan on said shaft, substantially as described.
' 3. In a carpet-sweeper the combination of a case having an opening in oneof its inclined sides, and a door in its top adjacent to said opening, a shaft journaled in said case, afan ease and a sponge in the air-passage and bexo tween said screens substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.'
BRODERICK H ASKELL.
